Since June 2018 my wife and I have been living 355 miles apart. She gets to come home on Friday night and has to leave as soon as church is over on Sunday morning to drive back. Three more years and she'll be able to retire. But, until then we're just going to have to tough it out.

When she gets home it is usually about 8 PM, to late for supper. But every Saturday she cooks up something wonderful. A while ago I got back to the house. She had made mashed potatoes w/ garlic, etc., baked chicken w/ lemon and pepper, peas and sweet tea w/ lemon. Oh ... she made some sort of cake w/ Nestle toll house morsels ... peanut butter and milk chocolate. I am about to have a bit of that to wind up the evening!

All my life I ate my mothers cooking. Then I got married and for the last 40 years I've eaten her cooking. I just thought it all was normal. From time to time someone would invite me to a steak dinner, etc. I thought that was so special. Now, the decent meals I get are at restaurants. I never thought I'd not be excited about hamburgers, pizza, steaks, shrimp, etc. And I do appreciate such meals. But, what she put on the table a while ago as simply outstanding in every possible respect. There is just enough of the mashed potatoes and peas left for tomorrow lunch. There is only one piece of chicken left! I'll have to make tea. Oh well! At least I know how to do that right!

God bless you all. Hope and pray that you and you loved ones are happy. Take it from me. When it gets to where you don't get to see them but a few hours or so a week, you rapidly come to realize just how much you love them. Sincerely. bruce.

That is a great deal of space between you. Which one of you took a job so far away?

She has been with her employers for 22 years and has 2 1/2 years left till retirement. Lot of difference between 62 and 65. She has a good position. No equivalent in this area unless she drives 120 miles daily. Daughter and SIL invited her to stay w/ them. She gets to see the grandson! Only a 22 mile round trip commute. PTL! And I learn a lot about PBJ, cereal and salad bars, etc.! Oh well! The three years will go quickly. Sincerely. bruce.

Bruce You are a better man than I am. I'm not sure I could handle your situation .

I do most of the cooking ,cleaning etc. as I retired 2 years ago on disability my wife works 54 hrs. a week.

For the first 1 1/2 years after I retired I took care of my special needs grandson when his parents went to work.
When my stepson and wife had a little girl 8 months ago my daughter inlaw became a stay at home mom so now I normally only babysit for 4 or 5 hrs. in a week.

Failed to mention - We are at present 355 miles apart b/c I was moved to a new pastoral appointment down on the coast. I told her there was not a man in the world that would quit his job after 22 years and walk away w/ so little time left till a full retirement. I told her to stay and that I'd just have to tough it out. We have been here now a year so it's looking a lot better. Sincerely. bruce.

You must be a Methodist minister, Management seems to move them around a lot. An old high school friend got moved around once too many times and left the ministry. He became a rehab counselor and seems much more content.

Hang in there both of you.

Time flies.

Not quite as often as they once did, at least around here. Years back a UMC pastor was lucky to stay in the same church for four years. Now they seem to leave them put a bit longer. My bud who is a UMC pastor seems to stay in a church 10-12 years on average. The practice could be different in other conferences, though.

Re: Time flies. Yep! We are 14 months into this countdown. My wife has it on her phone. It shows the years, months, days, hours, minutes and yes ... seconds till she retires.

Our Sunday morning worship runs from 10:30-11:30 AM, so Hazel was able to get in the road before 12 noon. Hopefully she will be there by 6 PM. :-) Sincerely. bruce.

That was a beautiful read. You are blessed to see that you are truly blessed WHILE you are being blessed! And that's a blessing!

My wife and I are in a similar situation in that she took a job 250 miles away, with my encouragement, for a once in a lifetime employment opportunity. I am eligible to retire in less than a year, and so have the option to narrow the distance should we choose that I retire. In the meantime, we alternate weekends together; she here, next week apart, following week me there, repeat.

I have done most of the cooking for almost 20 years. My work day ended at 3 PM and hers at 5:30 or 6 PM or even later. Now I just retired (3 weeks ago) and do almost all the cooking. Let me know if you want some simple recipes (to treat her!).
