Good idea?

I have an idea that I would like to run by everyone that I think is a good one. Due to David Carroll doing some detective work, I was able to get the original pebble grain blue case for my pre 29 & put them together again. This got me to thinking. What if we have either a new section, or just a post that Lee could keep stuck on the front page where all of us with empty cases can post what the cases are with the serial number gun that the case goes to. Even if you have a gun with the wrong case, you can post the case & hopefully reunite the case with the actual gun it belongs to. If someone posts a case that another member has the gun that goes with that case, the 2 of them can work out a sale or trade or something to get the case matched up with the gun. I think it could work. Lmk what ya'll think.

Even if this idea goes no further, I have 1 box that is in my possession. It is a gold box for a 38 M&P 4 in blue gun with serial number C171807. If anyone has this gun, send me an email & we can work out something to get the box for your gun.

I am all for it, but I believe the space it would take would probably overwork the software. Someone posted a similar thread on the private side about the same thing only with stocks...it met a like response.

For my money, if you come up with a box post the number and see if anyone has it.

Chris,as somebody who has been looking for a correct case for a pre 29 for quite a while I can see the advantage. It does require a special type of person to try to help other forum members in this way.I agree with Curtis on his method of getting the word out.

OK. I see ya'll point. I guess it would take up alot of space. Thanks for the responses Curtis & CT Smith Fan.

I suggested in another location that one could create a user-maintained spreadsheet in Google Docs that would keep tabs on numbered S&W parts that had become separated from their guns. The first idea specifically addressed stocks, but it could be done with numbered boxes and cases, too.

My idea triggered catastrophic and instantaneous Thread Death when I put it out in the other context. Does anybody here think there is merit to this approach?

I think the ideas have merit the problem will be in getting willing participants.
The thing is say I have a boxed set with the incorrect box or grips and post these items I am risking breaking up a set and possibly not getting another in return. Meaning, if the person who needs them doesnt have set to exchange etc. then I am stuck with the dilemma that I know someone who needs it and they know I have it.
Maybe I am rambling

I forget if I posted in that other thread or not- thought I did, but maybe I just thought about posting, and thought I did. :D

Guys, this is how it is-
As long as I live, and run this place, it will be improving, and growing in data.

I am thinking about this. That means it will stay on my mind till it gets done, or becomes UNfeasible. It is just "back burner" for now.

Once we get the database moved, we can look at this. We have so much stuff going, it has to come in steps.

Decades ago, an illiterate old philosopher told me- "People thinks I'm stupid, but my min' be goin' all da time." ;)

Great idea. As for the recipient not having the same box or grips, I think that is where the purchase would come in. They would have to pay enough to cover the cost of a new set of replacement grips or box. If they are like me, they would have no problem dishing out the modest amount that it would cost to reunite a long lost set.

No reason to keep "separated twins" apart forever.

I think both the box and stock idea is a good one. But I also agree with Curtis. Extras that we have would be fine. But if it were a mismatched box or stocks that we were using, we might not get a replacement. I guess in a case like that, it would be up to the owner if he/she wanted to advertise what they had. But I think it would be a great way to get some guns matched up with missing boxes and stocks. I've been amazed at the stories on here about cases being tracked to the owners of the guns!

I think it's a great idea, but I'm sure a lot of work to get going... I'm sure that, through this forum, we'd see a lot of reunited 'lost souls...'

I have often thought that even a separate category for boxes, under the Classified section would be very helpful, as well... It would be so much easier to search/keep an eye out for needed boxes. Just my 2 cents.

It's a good idea and we're not reinventing the wheel. A National Automatic Pistol Collectors Association member has had a similiar database on SN'd Luger magazines and it has been quite successful.

I think it's a great idea and am glad it's on Lee's To-Do List.

I would certainly participate, assuming I have anything that anyone would want. I think most people would be surprisingly generous about reuniting long-lost matching parts / accoutrements. :)
