After wasting hundreds of dollars on different scopes, mounts, ammo, free float and such and not being able to get the Big 10to hit anything consistently accurate, I had an issue! Others better than me shot it, same result!

I do not consider myself to be overly pickey, as I kinda knew what I bought in a skinny barrel. My expectations were low at a 1.5 MOA gun(standard AR platform). I wanted to go long with it, target objective was 6" group or less at 300 yds to ring steel or whatever hogs I find. Less would be a blessing!

With feeding issues on various ammo, took a long time for me to get off 50 yds and get the gun to work. Got it working and still would not hit! Thought I found the end of the rainbow when I found the barrel nut hand tight while installing the free float tube.

No glory! Still throwing 6-8 in groups at 100 using M80 or other stuff in the 150-168 gr range. Very inconsistent!

Sent it in to S&W, with example target.

Well, after a month or so, they sent it back. Got it today! I looked in the documentation and there is not a word of explanation of what or anything they did, just two blurry prints of targets they shot, first one says" shot 10 rds @ 50 yds Win superX 150 gr, second says the same with only 5 rds.

Both reflect 2.0 in. to maybe 1.75 in. groups with their ammo of choice, and this is at 50 yds! Well, that is still about 4 MOA in my book!

I AM DONE, they can KMA! I can shoot better groups with my old Colt AR with Iron sights!

Heck man, I wanted a newer .223 gun and recently bought the cheapest *** I could find, a DPMS for $550.00 and it drills quarter sized holes at that range!

I am done! I hope they read this ****, DPMS make .308 as well, and less than I paid for the smith. Maybe they even talk to you and acknowledge you! Obviously their tolerances are lacking if they can ship that out the door! My old Mini 14 does better as well, and they were well known for lack of accuracy!

I'm sorry you had so much trouble with yours. Mine shoots about 2" groups with bulk ammo at 100yds. I have also bought a Windham 308 and like it but it needs a different trigger. You may want to check them out. It has a lifetime transferrable warranty.

Cope,

Gotta love how some of us members kind of rub it in with their 1" and 2" groups after you vent your frustrations... Nice.

I've been looking for another .308 AR as well and have been looking at DPMS, Larue (bit pricey) and of course building one with either the DPMS lowers/uppers or Mega's.

Not sure. Anyway, sorry to hear your frustrations and troubles. Stay positive!

Sorry to hear that S&W thought 2" group @ 50yds was acceptable. I do shoot competitions and can tell you that 2" @ 50 should not have been passed by S&W.

If you want to sell your free float id be keen to buy it & try on my MP10.

Are feed probs, certainly had this using standard mag. Using DPMS 20round fixes that.

I did notice a better grouping with new Trigger.

Anyway copemech, sorry to hear your frustrations, hope I get mine resolved as buying rifles in NZ is expensive (my MP10 cost around $3500USD, timney cost $353usd, brake also cost $362usd). Price & variety wise you are very lucky.

If it's any consolation, I had a Taurus PT145 that I could not get to shoot consistently but others have been very happy with theirs. My guess is you got a bad one like I did.

I've written off Taurus semi-automatics because of that and other friends have similar issues. Their revolvers on the other hand have been fantastic, so I haven't written off the brand.

Yes man, seems you are ok, I would like to hear just what yours will do with standard M80 ammo, I would guess 1.5 or so?

I may not be done with these fellows as yet, as after a long conversation with the CS rep on Wednesday, I agreed to run another test using their ammo of choice(nothing special in the Win super-x 150). I did that today, 5"-6" groups at 100. Ran 2" groups with the cheap DPMS .223 stock trigger and with half the scope on it and cheap Fed 55 gr! The Tula steel did no worse!

Seems they may agree to a barrel swap for my satisfaction, with a caution it could get worse! I highly doubt that it could get worse so I may take my chances, otherwise my components will go on my new cheap DPMS as an easy swap!
If I want a different barrel, they are available.

Just like I stated in the other thread. Some guns are goo other guns are lemons with this platform. I have one of the lemons as well. I wish someone would make a aftermarket barrel for this beast. I highly doubt shipping it back to Smith is going to solve anything.

Sell it and buy the DPMS. It seems that S&W is producing way too many rifles with problems that can't be fixed because of the high percentage of proprietary parts.

This thread is stirring up old emotions with me!

Just got back from the range. Had to get the bolt guns to my liking for opening day tomorrow for buck season here in the great state of PA. Figured I'd take the ol m&p 10 with me after this thread stirred up so old memories with me. I was shooting of my lead sled and not coming anywhere near pushing this gun distance wise ( just 50 yards for fun). 3 shots just a inch to the bullseye, adjusted the scope, next shot right in the red! The following shot wasn't even on the paper followed by two more shots in the bullseye followed by another shot not even on the paper! I only adjusted my scope once in the beginning.

Thoughts???

Did you ck your barrel nut? Mine was finger tight from new!

Can I ask how you tightened the barrel nut?
For the gas tube to line up doesn't that dictate the tightness, or can you add a shim?

I've experienced this with my MP10. One set of 5 shots drills the target - same next same 5 handload is like a shot gun (even though fps within 30fps of each other). It is like the point of aim or barrel harmonic goes off. I'm hoping a free float fixes it.
