I just got a 640-1 police trade in for around 470. It was listed as 'very good' condition. Was this a good buy, or was I crazy? Anyway, I thought I could polish it up if it needed it.

That's a good buy. 38s and 38+Ps work fine, 357 magnums not so much fun. I think you will like it.

It sounds like a great buy to me. Locally, I have seen several sell for $550 or better.

My 640-1 is one gun that I will not be selling

I'd have taken that deal in a heartbeat, good find, Spikedog. As SAFireman said, that one's a keeper. My 640 certainly is. :-)

I'd say it was money well spent. I bought a 640-1 a couple of years ago for $475, just saw a well traveled one sell locally for $495 a few weeks ago.

You will likely see many more of these coming into the market. Kieslers has about 900 of these 640 trade ins and it doesn't look like they are selling very good for retailers.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm looking forward to shooting it with some Underwood 125gr +p's. Those are a little hot for me with my 340! The 640 will probably be my fall/winter belt gun (or pocket carry in the Carhartt coat).

Just went from 642 to a 640, wanted the power of the .357. Not too bad shooting rapid fire, should be OK if I need to fire it that fast. Little heavier but not overwhelming. Nice gun for a good price, Larry

I bought a M640 years ago and it's been a great revolver to own and shoot.

The additional weight of the all steel frame makes the gun shootable with full power Magnum ammo. My M640 is scary accurate with 145gr Winchester Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo.

Some real heavy hitters on this thread! Actually shooting magnum loads in J-frame mags. My 640 is the .38 version which I found on the "junk table" of a dealer. Mint condition, cable-tied to clunkers I wouldn't even bother to look at. You can't make this stuff up. Couldn't leave it there with it's matte stainless finish; you know how it is...
