When over all my guns that are going up to N.Y. when we move. Ordered 10 round mag clip for all my 9 mm. guns. I'm only taking 6 guns up with me. Wilson Combat X-tac--Sig 226x6L1-
SW 41-SW rev 686 4in. Ruger SP101 2 and 4 in. The rest of my guns i'm wrapping up for Christmas and all my kids and there mate are getting guns for Christmas !!!!!

I hope you have a NY CCWP or you're in deep do-do the second you cross the border into the peoples republic IF YOU HAVE YOUR PISTOLS WITH YOU. NY does not honor any other jurisdictions permits and many of NYs so called carry permits have more restrictions on them than the ten commandants.:( Just to own a handgun in NY even if it never leaves your house you need a permit.:mad:

NYlakesider nailed it - unless you have a valid NYS Pistol License, you are not allowed to possess (or even touch) a handgun in NY State.
You'll need to find a temporary home for your pistols until you become a legal resident of the state and then apply for your pistol license - figure around a year for that.
Show up with pistols in tow, and you're asking for a Felony weapons charge and confiscation of the "illegal weapons".

A New York carry permit is very restrictive. Years back mine was stamped for carry only for competition and legal hunting. I left the state in the early 90's so I have no real idea of how these provisions have changed. No doubt they are even more restrictive now. The gun laws alone would keep me from ever moving back as well as the one of the highest taxing states in the country.

Not all NY licenses are like that. It depends on the county that issues the license.
Some counties do not restrict their licenses at all, and others have different types of licenses. My county issues both restricted and unrestricted.
A restricted license is for hunting, hiking, camping, etc. Unrestricted is just that - carry anywhere except for the obvious Post Office, schools, etc.

Another common misconception among license holders here is "concealed or unconcealed". NY State is a concealed carry state. Even if your license is restricted, it is still a concealed carry license - we do not have open carry here.
 
S&W357: As I tried to impress upon you in several of your previous threads....
Don't move to NY because of 2A, taxes, freedoms, etc.

Read, understand and obey the safe act and carry requirements of NY

Do not try the patience and resolve of our sadly misguided gov. by bringing illegal guns into NY or illegally possessing them without a NYS carry permit. Our governor is looking for poster children to make an example of.

Please take the advice of those NYers who have posted information and advice. It has been very wise indeed.
 
Just from reading the replies to the threads the OP has made about moving to New York with his guns, I take it that:

1. You have to have a handgun permit to posses any handgun in the State of NY.

2. You have to be a resident of NY to get a permit.

3. The permits are approved by your county of residence first, if the county approves, then the State decides if it approves.

4. The handgun permit is gun specific and each handgun in the resident's possession must be listed on it.

5. The handgun possession permit is not good for carry, but it is possible to get a carry permit.

If my summation is correct, I assume that S&W357 cannot take any handguns with him when he moves to NY. He will have to establish residency, get a possession permit, then import the guns he wants probably via a FFL to FFL transfer.

I'm from Texas, so I do not know for sure. Would you NY familiar types agree with my summation?

1) Yes

2) Yes

3) No, the state law gives all of the licensing authority to the county. There are state parameters that the county must stay within, but beyond that, it is the county's game.

4) Sort of - There is only one license, but there is a gun list included, and the gun must be on the list for you to be in legal possession.*
No limit (at least in my county) of the number of guns one can own.

5) The county decides whether the license is restricted or not. My county will issue unrestricted licenses if the licensee can show a "valid reason" for it.

Some counties do not place restrictions on licenses at all.
The state law leaves those decisions up to each individual county.

* It is perfectly legal to shoot your friend's gun at the range, etc. You can't borrow it over night, but you can shoot it, handle it, etc. if you have a pistol license.

You're pretty accurate there. Basically a bit confusing as all carry permits are concealed carry but in certain areas judges put their own spin on what you can and cannot do. They tend to put on them things like hunting & target only, not to be carried loaded, must be carried in a locked box, barrel lengths they will allow and in some cases what guns they will allow. NY does have posses in premises permit but I have never ever seen one of them, from what I'm told basically only NY City issues them.

The law is a bit wacky the counties issue the permit but they must stay within certain parameters as established by NY state. All permits must be signed by a county judge or higher rated judge for most people. Some cities Albany is one a city judge can sign. The more urban the county the more restrictive for the most part!

All amendments to a permit (like getting a new gun must be signed by a judge.) That can take a few days to a few weeks. <I bought a gun from a fellow on here over 2 weeks ago and as of today I have not received my paper so I can take the gun hone from my FFL dealer>

The laws change and of course only for the worse.

Back in the 70s I was one of the first NRA certified instructors to teach the pistol permit pre issue course as mandated by our county judge. (things were much simpler then)
 
Do the ranges check your handgun permit? I assume if I broke up an invasion of my home with a Model 67 I did not have a permit for I'd get tossed in the pokey on firearms charges?

This is our judge's take on it:
MEMORANDUM FOR NEW & AMENDED LICENSES
Please note that stamped on the face of your pistol license is the legend "HUNTING, TARGET, CAMPING & HIKING". These are restrictions placed on your license that indicate during what activities you may carry your handgun. You may possess a firearm on your person or securely in your vehicle when engaged in hunting, fishing and trapping.* Additionally, you can possess the firearm when traveling to or from a target range or while at the range. You may also possess the firearm while at your camp or tenting in the woods, but not state parks. You may also possess the firearm while hiking in the woods. This also includes cross country skiing, snowmobiling, A.T.V.'s, biking or jogging. These restrictions will not prohibit you from transporting your firearm while travel- ing to or from a gun show, a dealers place of business, or another residence owned by you. Your license does NOT authorize you to carry a firearm on your person or in your vehicle at any other time for any other reason not listed above. WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING YOUR FIREARM FOR THE PURPOSES INDICATED YOU SHOULD INSURE THAT IT IS SECURE IN A SAFE PLACE. IF YOUR FIREARM IS EVER LOST, MISPLACED OR STOLEN, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SHOW PROOF THAT YOU HAD USED DILIGENCE IN SECURING YOUR FIREARM.

Most new licenses have the above restrictions, but our judge is pretty pro-gun and he is fair, so if you can show a good reason, he will issue an unrestricted license.

We can walk into our pistol office (no appointment needed) and immediately get an amendment. That means in our county we can buy a gun, add it to our license, and go pick it up on the same day.

I traded guns with a guy in a neighboring county, and we had to wait about 4 business days for his pistol office to shuffle their paperwork. :rolleyes:
