Got my 9mm barrel today for my 40c

I got my 9mm barrel today from MidwayUSA.

I can't wait to try it out in my M&PC!

I have thought about getting the full size 9mm barrel and having it threaded.

Has anyone done this?

I just got flamed on the mp-pistol forum for telling a poster that I had a 9mm barrel on backorder from Midway, giving him pricing and generally encouraging him. immediately, someone said that only "a friggin' idiot" would do something that unsafe. When I responded by referencing this and other threads on the S&W forum that reported hungreds or thousands of safe rounds fired and that some had even posted the results of micrometer measurements, I was told that everybody knew that it didn't lock up properly -- just ask S&W, StormLake or Barsto.

Another poster, whom I generally respect, chimed in to say that the measurements were incomplete and that they were intentionally incomplete, in order to mislead people. That's a pretty serious claim. Before I let my family shoot my pistol with the 9 mm barrel in, can you give me some reassurance (no flames please -- I'm still scorched from the other forum). I'm not saying that I think he's referring to this thread specifically, but please give me some ammo. Thanks!

Hundreds of rounds through my M&P40c with the factory 9mm barrel.
No problems, accuracy in good, locks up about as tight as you can get IMHO. You probably haven't heard from anyone that it does not work, right? Sometimes you try to help out and get flamed anyway. Don't worry about it. S&W is not gonna tell you to use the 9mm barrel in your 40 S&W. They want you to buy both guns. Storm Lake charges twice as much for the "conversion" barrel. Of course, it's just a 9mm barrel with the word "conversion" used and they want you to buy their overpriced barrel. You'll get to experience what many of us already know and you can laugh about it.

I have yet to see a post that describes what the difference is between a stock 9mm S&W barrel and a conversion barrel from one of the aftermarket suppliers. i also would ask what dimension should be checked to prove the allegations.

Now if you were talking about something like an XD, then yes you would have to use a conversion barrel because the hole in the end of the slide is different between the two and the conversion barrel is larger diameter to fit this hole and keep the lockup the same.

My S&W barrels (9mm & 40) are the same size.

Again, please show me where the difference is that makes the stock barrel unusable.

I have to admit, the 9mm barrel isn't as accurate as I had hoped. With the limited amount I have shot it (12 different loads incl 115, 124 & 147gr ), the best group I have gotten is 1.8" at 10 yds. I've tried several and so far they all seem to average 2.25-2.5" at 10 yds. I keep hoping to find that one decent sub 1" load but I am starting to think that might wishing for too much. I would like to try one of the 3rd party barrels just to see if there is any improvement possible in this gun.

My XD's have always been tighter grouping than my M&P (in .40) so I may get a 9mm barrel for one of them to see if it is any better.

Wow. My 9mm barrel in my M&P40c is just as accurate as any of my other 9mm guns, but I do shoot the M&P40c a little better than any of the 9mm's. Can't really compare accuracy as there is no way I am going to shoot 1-2" groups with any of them. Maybe my Ruger MkIII if I shoot from a rest. I figure a fist-size hole from 10 yards is good enough for me. Sorry if this doesn't help much.:o

No problem, thanks for your experience patbelly. I typically chrono my reloads in 5 shot groups at 10 yards for same-same comparison. I was wondering what others experienced. When I shoot 10 and 20 shot groups, it looks much better - as you said, a fist sized hole.

That' great - what size groups are you getting?

I don't get too fancy when I am plinking, measuring group size and all, but I can pick off clay targets at 50 yards with cheap Federal and Tula ammo. Not every shot, mind you, but regular enough to make my shooting buddies jealous.

They shoot a Glock 19, and a Kahr .40. Mine is a M&PC .357 with the S&W 9mm barrel.

Six inch steel at 25 yards is no challenge at all.
