Because that's the only thing I'll be able to use it as for the foreseeable future. There hasn't been any 9mm ammo available within 100 miles for months.

No ammo anywhere

I don't envy anyone living in Illinois because of their gun laws, but rest assured, the ammo shortage is everywhere.

The other thing I was going to say is that imho the Glock 19 makes a better 9mm bludgeon that the Shield. fwiw, ymmv, my $.02.

I don't own any Glocks, never have. Not to say they aren't good guns. But wouldn't a Glock 19 be more comparable with a M&P9c than a Shield? And I don't believe you could get a new Glock 19 for around $400. I could be way off base here. Wouldn't be the first time. But I just don't think it's a fair comparison. I do agree with "the ammo shortage is everywhere" though!

I am in the Rockford, IL area and have been finding some 9mm here and there. I have about 1,000 rounds stockpiled buying it as I come across it. I will admit .40 is easier to find. That's why I am glad I got the .40 shield! :)

Clock 17 = M&P full size
Glock 19 = M&P compact
Glock 26 = M&P shield (except the shield is single stack)

Actually..

Full Sized M&P Height wise is between the Glock 17 and Glock 19.
M&P Compact Height wise is between the Glock 19/26
The shield should be in a class of it's own because it is single stack and thinnger than glocks and the M&P

I just compared my M&P 40c to a Glock 19. My pinky rests very comfortably on the grip of the Glock, while on my 40c, my pinky goes under the gun, so it must rest on the mag extention. Also the Glock 19 slide is 1/2" longer than my 40c. But I don't have a 26 to compare my M&P to. I think the 40c is somewhere between the 19/26, or 23/27. Either way, the 40c feels better in my hand than the Shield, & that's the most important feature to me. Best $325 I ever spent. GARY

Forgot to say...welcome to the forum!

I also have a new and not fired Shield due to the ammo situation.

I was just trying to give a ballpark comparison. I have the 17, 19, and 26 as well as the M&P FS and Compact.

Wasn't trying to make it seem like they are exactly the same. In order from largest to smallest it would be:

G17, M&P FS, G19, M&Pc, G26, Shield

I also live in Illinois, where did you find the Shield?
BTW, I have plenty of ammo but no Shield.

I just checked midwayusa.com and they have one variety of 9mm "match grade" ammo in stock. Expensive, but not ridicules.

I don't know if you can mail order ammo in Illinois.

We still can here in the People's Republic of California -- for how much longer, I don't know.

Sounds about right. I have a M&P FS and M&P Shield and my buddy has a Glock 17. I should get all 3 together and compare. :)

in a word...learn to reload....get what you want, when you want it

Yeah if you can find reload equipment and supplies! It's an even worse shortage than retail ammo! I haven't seen any SP primer in months and bullet prices are climbing.

Besides, you don't end up saving much money as you shoot twice as much! :D

Fwiw, the Shield with the extended mag has close to the same grip length as a G19. The Shield actually has a longer grip than the 9c in this configuration. The 9c is probably a good comparison to the G26 size wise

Well just come on by Central Obamastan on your way back from Florida, and ole Billy will share 1/2 his 9mm with you, my buddy is thinking about buying an AR made in North Western Obamastan and told me he needed at least 1000 rds of 5.56 because of the situation in NK, with our little comrade pointing his ????? at Austin, TX or somethin like that. I guess we'll all have to share or make our own. Billy Magg

FYI: This is an email I just received.
You may not know this but George Soros owns most of the ammunition manufacturing companies and many arms manufacturers as well. He's selling ONLY to the government right now, per WH & DHS orders. My son works for ATK, who owns just about all the rest of the ammunition companies that Soros doesn't own. He tells me that ATK has been ordered by the federal government to curtail sales of ammunition, primers and powder to the retail market. What you see currently on the shelves is old stock and what's left in the warehouses since the CT shootings and new stock will NOT be appearing anytime soon. ATK and Soros' compaies have more than enough government contracts to keep them going for years to come.
Like, Soros' companies, ATK is a huge defense contractor and they've been told to sell ONLY to the DOD, TSA, FBI, DHS and local/federal law enforcement agencies.
My son has seen the proposed pricing schedule for Federal, CCI, Hornaday, Remington, Winchester and several other ammunition manufacturer's lines of ammunition, components, reloading equipment (ATK owns Outers, RCBS, Hoppe and a host of others) and he's flabbergasted. As an example, when the sales of .22 LR bulk ammo resumes, the pricing will be over $50 for a 535-round Value Pak. They're also going to raise the prices by 300-400% on dies, presses, powder measures and the like.
He's in management there at ATK in Salt Lake City and they're NOT happy with it all all. They firmly believe this will basically shutdown the civilian market while leaving the government as the only purchaser of their products.
