Got my CCW permit!

In NC it cost me about $175 for a permit good for five years. As I understand things, the permit allows me to carry concealed only (no open carry for permit holders).

Congrats on the permit. I'm still confused on why you would not at least get on a waiting list at several LGSs BEFORE you got your CCL. Good luck on your Shield search.

Finally got my CCW permit in the mail on Friday. Now to start looking for a Shield.

I guess I'm moving in the opposite direction. LOL. I already have my shield 40, just received my Hidden Hybrid Holster in the mail today and signed up for CHP class for this Thursday. End results the same though

Shields are somewhat hard to get. Early on, my LGS had the Shield in 9mm for $360. Recently, he got two Shield .40s in and sold them on Gunbroker.com for $520 ea.

I guess I didn't want to put the cart in front of the horse, so to speak. Here in Northern VA, we have gun shows quite often (once a month or so) and I've seen Shields at the last two. Of course, now that I'm looking to buy one, they'll be nowhere to be found.

I guess I don't understand these sentiments. Were you a wacko nutjob before you got a CCW and the training somehow settled you down? It's no greater responsibility than driving a car, probably less since most CCW holders never shoot anyone.
Actually I am a normal guy who is a Vietnam Era Veteran, whose job it was to train pilots in A7E aircraft to drop armament and later to train pilots and aircrew of S3A aircraft to locate and if necessary destroy enemy submarines in the 1970's we also trained the crews of these S3A's to drop nuclear weapons once a month. Believe me when you talk about use of weapons of any sort I take the task and responsibility very seriously. So far after carrying handguns for over 38 years I have never had to use any of my personal weapons, and thankfully due to training none of those U.S. Navy pilots or aircrew have had to deliver a nuclear weapon although they had the capability.

Besides I am honorably discharged and held a "need to know" clearance in the U.S. Navy and nut jobs or felons are disallowed from owning much less having a carry permit anywhere in the U.S. unless they have some sort of political connection (which I do not)!

Missouri: at least in my county, NRA pistol course and safety training, get proof of completion, take to sheriff's office fill out application, finger printed then got the endorsement back in exactly one week, take to DOR and get non driver card with CCW endorsement good for three years. Total cost from begining to end, 185.50.
Peace,
gordon

Arizona: Oh, wait, no CCW permit required :). Anyone 21 and over can conceal or open carry. No cost.

Nice story Houdini, & Thank You for your service!

I had to take an 8 hour course, get fingerprinted and supply (passport) photos. I had to get release letters from four hospitals that I had no mental issues. Then I took a test on the course material. My biggest gripe is some states do not honor my permit. I am 67 and i had a PA permit for years. After i moved to NC (an open carry state), I dropped the idea of carrying. Recently when the government changed the rules about carrying in US parks, I decided to become licensed again. I live very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and The Great Smokey Mountains.

First, congrats to the OP and good luck on your decision - .40 is more powerful but ammo for a 9 mm runs a lot cheaper.

And I'll join the drift:

Ohio -
Took a 2-day weekend class, 6 hours on Saturday and 6 on Sunday.
Went to Wallyworld Sunday night to have passport photos taken.
Went to the Sheriff's office Monday at 2 PM (by appointment).
Received a phone call Tuesday at 9:30 AM that my license was ready to be picked up.

And Bob's yer uncle ...

Wisconsin has hoops to jump through. I'm all for proper training, but to have the right to carry a gun I don't believe there should be any roadblocks as long as you are legally allowed to own a gun.

In WI we can send in a copy of our Hunter Safety certificate and $50 and they send a permit.

I took a class for the Utah permit and was fingerprinted and photographed. But when I decided my wife needed a permit I just sent in her info and WI sent a card.

Congratulations! We have a 9mm. Shield, it's the wife's EDC and we both love it. I am hoping to get one for myself but they are scarce. AZ. doesn't require a permit to conceal but we got permits anyway. 8 hours, 4 classroom, 4 at the range shooting 50 rounds. We had a very good teacher and she went in to a lot of "stuff" that wasn't required so we put in more than 8 hours. Class was $70 and the permit was $65 and is good for 5 years. Having the permit makes buying firearms so much easier.

In AZ too, but don't have a permit - will probably get one soon anyway. Also got a Shield 9mm. What's easier about buying with a permit? I thought it was very easy to buy mine without it.

You don't have to wait on the phone call to the feds. Much faster.

OK, thanks, nice to know there's some perks with it. Fortunately I wasn't in a hurry when I got the shield and the saleslady didn't have to wait on the phone too long :).

Bought my M&P Shield 9mm 2 1/2 weeks ago at Academy sports after search for several weeks. Applied for my CCW the same day and received it in the mail yesterday (7/7/2012). Life is good.

Congrats on your license.

For anyone that thought they had it rough, here's my saga:

New York State - My experience in my home county.
1) Basic NRA pistol course.
2) Pick up application. Can't have the application without certificate from safety course.
3) Photo & fingerprints at Sheriff's office. Turn in completed application at this time. Sheriff's office sends out forms to state, 4 character references, employer, and family court.
4) Wait.
5) Wait some more.
6) Papers come back, Sheriff signs off, paperwork goes to pistol office.
7) Pistol clerk submits paperwork to county judge.
8) County judge decides "yes", "no", or "maybe".
9) Hear back from either pistol office or judge's chambers.
10) Heard from judge, scheduled a hearing (I was an idiot as a kid, had an arrest record).
11) Have hearing with judge's designee. Designee reports his findings back to the judge. At this time, application goes back to the bottom of pile.
12) Approval letter from pistol office.
13) Buy a gun. You cannot possess a gun without a license or approval letter.
14) Schedule appointment to pick up permit. You cannot get this appointment without a gun to put on your license.
15) Pick up permit, go take possession of handgun.

December, 2010 - Scheduled required pistol safety course.
January, 2011 - Took all-day safety course.
Jan/Feb, 2011 - Gathered all required info. for application, scheduled appointment at Sheriff's office.
March 2, 2011 - Dropped off app.
November, 2011 - Notice for a scheduled hearing.
December, 2011 - Hearing takes place.
February , 2012 - Approval letter comes in mail.
March 1, 2012 - Pick up pistol license.

Total cost including safety course: $185 ish.
No expiration on license, but revocable at any time at judge's discretion.

I ❤ New York.

The saving grace is that NY is a carry-concealed state (no open carry allowed) and once I got my license, I can add or remove guns any time the office is open, no appointment needed.[/

That saga makes me glad I'm living in Virginia!
1). Fill out paperwork.
2). Two weeks later, pick up CC permit, "Here ya go Hon, you want me to laminate that for ya?"

Welcome to the world of legally armed concealed carry (or open if I want) you will find that you have now taken on a great responsibility and view life in a lot different matter. Keep in mind that you are responsible for those bullets that are discharged from your weapon, it is a very serious matter.

I know that my outlook on life in general is a whole lot different than what it would be if I were not armed legally!

Well put my friend. BTW it seems as if "Shoot Straight " has a lock on the Shield supply. Picked up my Shield 40 last week and they have what seems to be an unlimited supply. They had a M&P seminar this weekend for test firing any of the M&P line. See if you can locate a local "Shoot Straight " and give them a call and you may be pleasantly surprised.
