Got my First 686 Today and.....

I sent my 586 (no dash) back to the factory in November 2005. At that time the factory e-mailed me a FedEx shipping number. I called FedEx and they came to my house the day after Thanksgiving and picked it up. I did have to package the revolver myself.

I had it back the following Friday. It was shipped back by UPS to my place of work. In addition to the recall work they cleaned out the internals for no cost.

I was very impressed with S&W.

Those grips with the speedloader cutout are identical to the ones that came on my no-dash (serial number AFFxxxx) in 1985. They look nice but I must say I hate the way they feel. It's my competition gun so I don't mind using Hogues on it. For show these days I'd probably throw a set of Ahrends on it.

The recall on these models was due to certain revolvers having problems with primers flowing back into the firing pin hole with certain magnum ammunition, casing the revolver to bind up. Other than putting your revolver out of service until you get it unstuck it wasn't really a safety issue. Mine has never had the problem, with probably 1000 magnum and 11,000 .38 rounds though it, although my Dad's similar-vintage one has--he's had the mod done on his. If you're going to use the revolver for hunting or self-defense I'd get the mod done a soon as possible; for range-only use you could wait to see if the problem crops up.

Great S&W Service. I sent my 686-2 FED X at S&W expense on 1/23/2009 for the "L" Modification.
I received a letter yesterday,1/29/2009, from S&W advising me they had received my 686-2 and "most repairs are completed and the item returned within 2-3 weeks after receipt at the factory." Then this morning 1/30/2009 I get a recorded call from UPS that I have an Overnight package being deliveried today from Smith & Wesson.
