Got my first Victory but dont kow anything about markings

Karl,

Thanks for the info on Photobucket, I uploaded some pictures so I will give it a try.
I see from your pictures of the markings on your revolver that you have the MA next to what I think may be the date. That messes up my idea that area was reserved for the armorer who did the rebuild. I have been finding some of this info from Ian Skennerton publications.

thanks again,

Karl,

Looking at the clear markings on the pictures you provided I found out a couple things. On the first picture just left of the broad arrow is a crown (the double hump)the inspectors number and the L for Lithgow. On the last picture the crossed flags are a proof, sometimes there is one on the barrel and another when the barrel is fitted to the receiver, your revolver may have had the barrel replaced in it's lifetime. I really cannot make out all portions on the proof in the 2nd picture. As a FYI the broad arrow is an indication that it is owned by the Government, so anything sold to the British Empire will have this arrow. There is actually a book explaining all these marks and proofs available, I just may have to spring for one.

regards,

gg

garra, thanks for the info. The serial number on the bottom of my barrel matches the serial number on the frame.

Karl,

I was afraid of that. The example I saw in the acticle I was reading on the subject showed that exact proof when a barrel was inspected and another slightly more elaborate variation for the inspection when they were assembled. I did order the book I mentioned about the proofs and marks today. Maybe more will be reveiled as to when and why they were used.

regards

gg
