Well, I guess we won't get another New Yorker here!

Oh well.

I noticed you mentioned Palmettos on another thread, too. What started you on that (them)?

Actually, no big deal, unless you get one in your hair, or down the back of your shirt.

And they make cute little noises when you smash them with bare feet.

While living in Ft. Lauderdale in 1978, I pounded one to a pulp in the shag carpet with the heel of a shoe. Went to the kitchen to get a paper towel to clean it up, only to find it was gone when I got back.

They are tough!

I've got an acre and half of uncut palmettos around my house and those critters really don't bother you. Maybe one or two come in the house in a years time. They don't seek people food like house roaches do, they are just happy in the palmettos.

Catch em with your hand and throw em in the toilet. You don't have a problem until you see them in the daylight hours. Now if you want trouble they are called German Roaches.

By the way the Palmetto Roach taste a lot like chicken.

I will NEVER retire in a State that has these creatures.

WOW-
You mean that's all it takes to Yankee-proof a state?

I see great marketing potential here! I mean, MEGA-bucks!

If they also work on Californians, think of the market potential in the Rocky Mtn states!!!

DISCLAIMER- Before all the esteemed Northern members get all pouty, I abdicate all responsibility for this post. When you give me a setup like this, you know I lack the moral character to resist......

My wife and I stayed in Tampa for about six months, thought we were going to buy a house there or in Sarasota. A situation in her family ended up changing that, but while we were there, my wife was pretty disgusted with the palmetto bugs, which were quite large. She still refers to them from time to time, but I try to downplay the bad impression she creates when she taks about these "huge" bugs. I refer to them as palmetto dogs - cute little palmetto dogs not much larger than the palm of your hand.

Ladder, if you come to Clearwater again, let me know. There are a couple of other forum members who would probably buy us lunch.

But, no bugs.

Model520fan, You were obviously in the wrong part of town. We (that'd be those blessed NOT to be yankees AND who live here) really rarely see those Palmettos. Maybe see one or two a year.

They really aren't a problem. You see them once in a blue moon, but I agree they do get big. I once trained one to fetch a ball.

+1

I use to think I'd like to retire and head south. The friends I have that did so generally talk about rattle snakes (TN), Palmettos (FL), scorpions (AZ) . . . I think I'll stay somewhere where there's an annual freeze. Keeps some of the critters at bay.

Oh yea? Well our cockroaches will kick your cockroaches butts!!!

In all honesty, big or small, southern or northern, they are all disgusting critters. I don't like 'em at all.

When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale I was at my girl friend's house when one of them ran out in the middle of the floor. My girl friend jumps up and runs into the kitchen and returns with a can of bug spray. She than proceeds to beat the bug to death with the can. Must be some logic to that.
