It was early morning, dark and rainy, as always around seattle as I was heading to Wenatchee. Then the christmas tree lights came on and I wondered if it was for me or not. Yes, it was. So I pulled over wondering what the hell did i do wrong. He pulled up close behind and had his spot light pointed at my rear view mirror which shined right into my eyes. I rolled down both drivers and passenger window down with electric switch, then put both hands on the wheel. He was back there for quite a while, during which I was thinking I had my hand gun next to my right under the fold down center console of my F350. Soon the state patrol officer came to the passenger window and much to my surprise he asked, "Do you have any weapons in there?" I responded and said yes sir I have a hand gun and I have a license to carry. He then asked, "Where is it"? I said, it is under the center fold down seat, and noded my head to where it was, keeping both hands on the wheel. He then asked, "Is it loaded?", I responded and said, yes sir it is. He then asked for my drivers license and insurance card. I told him that my wallet was in my front right pocket, next to where the hand gun was. He just said, don't make any sudden moves and you will be ok. I handed him my license plus my CCL. he then went back to his potral car, then came back and said I had tail lights out. After a few words he then said, Thank you for being honest about your gun, with a small smile on his face. I saluted him and took off. Kind of cool.

A friend in LE told me this. One day he ran his own name through the computer. The first thing that came up was CC permit, then LE ID. He then ran his wife's car tag #. CC permit. Best to keep this in mind when there are lights flashing in your mirror.

Not all states show that data to the officer; I think that here in Georgia, it is not in their computers. Obviously, if you are in a state where the officer has likely already been warned by his computer that you have a permit, it might be best to declare it right away and keep the hands on the wheel.

Here in Missouri your ccw is in there computer. I was pull over by the State Patrol and forgot to mention that I had a loaded weapon in the vehicle. When I did tell him that there was a weapon he told me that he had figure I had one because it was in the computer. He said it was no big deal that I didn't mention in the beginning. He told me to have a good day and be safe.

Looks like you did all the right things, that is exactly what is taught in the CHL classes. In TX the officer has your CHL information when he runs your tag number. It is best to be honest upfront.

Hello VTX1800C,

I've been pulled over by the WSP a few times in the last couple of years and none of them said a word about my CPL or guns and I didn't remember them myself. I didn't get tickets so I must not have been too naughty. It doesn't hurt to be friendly and refrain from telling them that the governor should have taken away their ticket books when they turned in their 28s.

I presumed that CPLs showed on their computer but it's good to have that confirmed. Does anyone know if Wash. requires us to say that we are armed?

Best Regards,
Gil

In TX they do not have your car tag connected to your CHL, unless they have figured out some way to do that in the last few years.

If they run your drivers license your CHL will come up.

In TX you DL number is on your CHL

Last time I got pulled over , the cop asked , "Do you have any drugs or weapons on you?"

Well , how do ya give a yes/no answer to that?

I do carry , either concealed or one in the truck.

Only drugs are prescription , and some Excedrin in the console.

In Texas it is not now illegal to carry in your vehicle, even if you do not have a CCL. If you do have a CCL, you should produce it along with your drivers license.

You are correct, it is after they run your DL# that the officer knows you have a CHL. Previously a driver had to furnish their DL and CHL at time of stop. With change in law the driver need not furnish CHL. However if the officer is going to run the DL# and discover you have a CHL it still seems that you may as well provide the CHL along with the DL when stopped.

I was pulled over by WSP soon after I got my CPL. I didn't have a gun on me at the time. He asked if I had any weapons and I answered no. He asked 3 more times and said are you sure you have no weapons. I was new to CCW and just forgot that I even had a permit. I was with my wife and mom and our little dog was wagging her tail. He didn't even ask to see my DL and just said to slow down. I later found out that in Washington all PD have it pop up on the screen as soon as they run your plates. You are under no obligation to tell them you have a weapon unless they ask. They always do and most are friendly and ok with it from what I have seen. I don't have any expierience with Seattle or Tacoma PD though. Seattle and Tacoma are a bit different than the rest of the state being more urban.

Well, it really shouldn't be a big deal here in Missouri because you don't have to have a CCW to have a concealed weapon in your vehicle, loaded or not. As a matter of fact you can have that handgun anywhere in the vehicle or on your person as long you are in the car.

My son got stopped by a Highway Patrol cop in central Texas.
Think the deal was a dead tail light, for which he got a warning.

When asked about guns, he answered that he had a Colt .45 auto in the car.

The cop asked why. The son said,"Because I can."

The cop shook his head and smiled, and that was that. But some officers are more critical of privately carried guns. I imagine that many in the Yankee states don't like the idea.

I'd hate to encounter a cop in NYC, even with a permit on me.

It Happened to ME

I was driving to Lewiston Idaho through Walla Walla Washington about ten years ago and I was a little heavy on the accelerator. Lo and behold a WSP Trooper had an issue with that and pulled me over. I am licensed in both WA and OR to carry concealed. When he made contact and asked for driver license and proof of insurance. I gave him both, plus my LEO (city police) ID and WA CPL (I did this as a courtesy), I appreciated it when I contacted a driver with a CPL. He asked me where the firearm was and I replied. "It's on my right hip under my shirt". His reply; "I'll make you a deal. You don't go for yours and I won't go for mine". I kept my hands on the wheel in plain sight and he went back to his cruiser to do the "paper work". He returned with the citation (Yes, LEO's get citations too and "Zero" slack from the judge! The Sergeant, the Chief...) and I was on my way.
