Broad daylight, downtown area of central Illinois college town, cool but sunny, pedestrian and vehicular traffic-normal day.

The van in front of me pulled over to the curb abruptly and the driver exited leaving the drivers door open into traffic. As I drove around the open door and entered the next intersection, something hit the drivers side of my van with a very loud thump. It took a while to sink in but I saw 2 B/Ms in my rear view mirror running north on the street I had just crossed. The guy in the car behind me was waving and shouting something. I stopped and looked at the drivers side of my van and found a bullet hole about 3 foot behind my drivers door near the gas cap.

I lost my normally jovial disposition and took the next 2 rights to look for the runners while calling 911. I was a lot calmer when I was shot at in 1977 while in uniform so I don't want to hear the 911 tape of my call today. The troups- all of which I still know and some I trained showed up and I am very certain located the 2 runners I saw but I could not id by face. Neither could another witness who saw them ditch the gun which was recovered. The 2 runners were ided and cut loose for now.

Other witnesses saw a W/M running the opposite direction of the shooting scene so appearently there was a "misunderstanding" between the 3 and my van happened to get in the way.

There was no necessity or opportunity this time to use a firearm but it was reassuring to have one.

Puts you to thinking about a carrying a bigger gun and more bullets.

Agreed. I carried a .380 for a couple years and never thought much about it until someone tried to carjack me, and then it seemed awfully dinky. I bought a 45 the next day, have added six more since, and have retired the .380.

Glad you weren't hurt. But if someone shot my vehicle, I'd be a little cranky about it too!

how come the bullet didnt penetrate the bodywork and what was the gun?

This reminds me of a story that happened to a friend.

My friend moves to a new city, driving down the street a guy waving a gun runs from a bank. The alarm is ringing the guy with the gun jumps in a waiting car and is off.
My friend follows them driving his van. The details are a bit fuzzy but after a while the bad guy lean out the window and puts two 45s through his windshield narrowly missing him with one shot. He gives up chasing them when they go down some lonely dirt road.

First, I'm GLAD that you are OK. Second, IMHO you did the right thing, call 911 and were the best witness possible. Stay safe.

Glad you weren't hurt. I'm sure that when the culprit is apprehended that the authorities will confiscate his Illinois Firearm Owners Identification Card.

Really? Who'd a thunk it :D

Utah.44 i'm glad you are OK. It could have been a lot worse. I'm sure there's a body shop around that can treat bullet wounds in vehicles. Thank God it's the van and not you.

I can't believe how insensitive the previous posters have been. How's your van doing? ;)

On a serious note, even though it's already been said, I'm glad it wasn't you.

its just a van ....
now had you been in a Mustang, Corvette, Camero, Firebird, or any number of beloved machines .. this post might have been a calling of the posse for a good old fashioned lynchin':D
