Got shot at today-wounded my van

how come the bullet didnt penetrate the bodywork and what was the gun?

Must be a thicker area. The gas tank is right behind where it hit.

The dent is about 1/2" deep. I may add the details later but the investigaion is still pending.

Too true. I posted some time ago about my truck getting T-boned. After a month in the shop I got it back. Three days later I see what appears to be a bullet strike on the cab! It looked much like what the OP posted. Then at church the following Sunday, a very prim lady tells me about being shot at on the freeway.

What the heck is going on?

Glad you weren't hurt Utah. Seems like the street punks have no compunction about yankin' the trigger. Glad they don't train! And I'm glad you were driving a gas guzzler and not one of them little "smart" eco-friendly devices folks pass of as vehicles these days.

Could the damage be from a ricochet? It looks way low to be a direct strike and it would explain the irregular damage and lack of penetration.

On the subject of cars and bullets going through them, cars merely are concealment unless you are behind the engine block. Perhaps the anti-intrusion bars in the doors will stop a pistol bullet but that is not much to hide behind and the bad guy has to miss the rest of the door and you. Even wheels are little protection against a rifle round at short range. I once fired a .303 Enfield loaded with Remington's 180gr SP at a steel wheel in the desert and I am not certain the bullet noticed the wheel was there. Clean hole with some copper jacket around the edge.

Would have set a Volt on fire.
