Gotta 32 S&W Reg. Police and now need advice

I just picked up this cute Regulation Police in 32 S&W Long, and am excited to shoot it. I've got 2 boxes of ammo to play with, and dies, Molds, and such on the way. This will be my new "Kit Gun Lite" to compliment my M63. It is so much lighter than the 63, and looks like it will be fun to plink with.

I have several questions to ask and would appreciate any help anyone can give.


I believe that this falls close to WWII production as the Serial Number is 5275XX. I plan on getting this lettered through S&W, but can anyone tell me a DOB??

Also, the trigger on this seems very heavy in DA, and very light in SA. IS this the norm?? Any suggestions on how to reduce the DA and increase the SA pulls??

THe grips are original but someone with the initials "KW" or "WK" carved one initial each on each grips lower edge. Could this stand for "Wabbit Killer"??? Could this be Elmer Fudd's gun or possibly the valuable "William Kidd" gun (even though he was supposedly killed many years earlier).

I see they make repro grips for the roundbutt version, but does anyone make repros for the SB I frame?? I don't want to mess with a cutting a J frame grip to fit.

This gun looks to be addictive, as I am now looking at vintage holsters, replacement grips, and additional bullet molds.

While your gun does indeed appear to be the infamous and elusive "Fudd gun", the only way to know for sure is to fire it. When you pull the trigger, if it goes ba-dee-a-ba-dee-a-ba-dee-a-BANG you have found it!

Neat gun, you'll have lots of fun shooting it. A lot like a big .22lr, low noise and recoil.

This 3rd model pre war was likely made in 1940, 1941 or 1942. it is very close to the end run serial # of 536684. The 3rd model was made for 31 consecutive years. After a 2 year halt in production it was again made from 1946 until 1960 when the model 30 and 31 began.

I just got my Dies for it today from Midway. Perhaps this weekend I'll take it for a spin. I will have to be careful though, as it's SA pull is really light, and the grips a little small for my hand. I do have to get it to a smith to work on putting more weight to the single action.

You will find 32 Long very cheap to reload for. Most cast bullets are around 100 gns and most powder charges around 2.5 gns. A pound of powder goes a LOOONG way. I think right now the most expensive part of my 32 reloads is the primer.

I already was thinking on how much it'd cost. I figured that it would cost me $3.56/50 to reload.

<LI>$17.00 for 100 unfired brass, and assuming a conservative 6 reloads for each.

If I don't consider the cost of Brass, it gets down to $2.14/50

If you only get 6 reloads out of your 32 Long brass you are doing something wrong.

What can I say? I am conservative by nature when it comes to $$$.

How many reloads are you getting from 32 longs??

32 Long is the first ctg I ever reloaded, in 73 or 74. I don't keep exact records anymore but after 25 loadings or so I started loosing about 1% of the brass due to neck splits. I may have been over crimping though. Some of the brass I am loading now I know I bought as new ammo in the 80's. On the other hand I have 200 rds of new PMC a friend gave me for Christmas in 2006.

Check gun stores for ammo they accuire and gun shows for ammo. It usually goes cheap and you can re-use the brass. Larry

Funny you should say that.....Went and visited a couple local shops today and as I was on my way out, I spotted an old box of Remingotn 32 Longs on the shelf....And the owner of the shop said $10...He also said he had some unprimed WW brass and pulled out 4 boxes of Yellow box winchester and 1 box of Norma...So I ended up with 250 brass and 50 cartridges for $35 OTD. About 1/2 of what new stuff is going for from midway.

The brass is in the tumbler as I type this.

Well if you decide your going to discard the brass after 6 loading please keep me in mind. I'm always looking for brass that is housebroken.

BBought 375 .32 S&W long brass at a gun show several years ago. 15 bucks If I remember right. Stll using them after a lot of reloads. 2 Grs. Bulleye is about right with 95 gr. lead bullets
