(In another thread I mentioned yesterday.) I took my .327 Fed Mag. 6" Ruger GP100. With the 85 gr bullets it was pretty tame & accurate. Less of both with the 100 gr, but manageable. I just put a new front sight on, they make it so simple, one of those yellow tube things. It's only maybe 5 years old. I changed the hammer spring out right after I bough it. They're nice guns.

I picked up one of the lipseys gp's a few years ago. They are fun to shoot long distance. I got mine pretty chesp. Figured i would never have a model 16 or colt OM 32. Fast forward i ended up with both and a 631. Love 32's!!

I’m curious if the .327 is truly as versatile as the .357….considering it’s blast and ballistics….so, one can download for small game or plinking and have all the lesser .32s’ to shoot through it yet, the same can be said about the .357 and .38 and the plethora of loads going up and down and is the. 32 family of ammo reasonable in terms of expense compared to .357/.38 stuff? And now my personal thought is, maybe the .327 would be cool for me in that single-six or Blackhawk in a 6-1/2” bbl for the trail…..(I’m biased to .357)cheers

I have a Blackhawk in the .327, I believe it was only made in 5 1/2 barrel,
I like it. And it is 8 rounds

I did something far out of the normal with my .327 Federal chambered GP-100.

I thought it might be interesting to find a bullet that could safely be pushed at full pressure but ALSO be purchased in bulk.

I say this because I had some discussions with the ballisticians at ATK way back in the day well over a decade ago and they warned me of potential damage if I were to try and push lightly constructed bullets at full 45k psi max pressure. This discussion began because I had a few bags of Winchester 71gr FMJ bullets meant for the .32 ACP and I was having decent luck shooting them in .327 Federal but only at light target speeds.

Back to my project…

I worked up a .327 Federal load using the Xtreme heavy plated rifle bullet designed for the 7.62x39. It’s a pointed .311” diameter, 123gr rifle bullet.

It looks like this next to an 85gr Hornady XTP:

…and it looks like this when my GP-100 cylinder is loaded:

This load will not fit the Ruger SP-101 as the cylinder is shorter. I’m sure it work in the Blackhawk. I have no idea what the Single Six cylinder length is.

I worked the load up with Alliant 2400 and it’s been a fun one.

glenncal1, post 4, that’s the Ruger I wanted but I ended up buying the 6” GP. Two months later I finally found the 5” Lipsey. I ended up trading the Lipsey for a S&W 629-6. Both are spot on if I do my part.

Sevens, What fun! What kind of velocity did you get with the full pressure load and 123 grain bullet?
I had to check my records to answer this properly and the first thing I found was that I mis-remembered! I did not work these up with Alliant 2400... rather, I used Accurate #9.

10.0 grains gave me 1,175fps average
10.6 grains gave me 1,188fps average
11.2 grains gave me 1,220fps average

Because I did not see huge gains in velocity and extraction was nice & easy and I have no pressure testing equipment and no published data to work with, this was a place where I was comfortable with what they were doing for me.

These loads could perhaps be advanced, or plenty of other powders tried. These bullets are one-thousandth smaller diameter than the jacketed bullets that .327 Federal is typically loaded with, so I think my project is in a safe place.
