A 68 yr old friend of mine lost most of his hearing in the Marines artillery. He's been to VA and civilian croakers, and the verdict is damage is bad enough that hearing aids won't help. He spent 4K on some to no avail. He can mostly hear well enough but a lot of higher frequencies escape him. He is someone who really needs a GPS to get around. I lent him mine and he says he can't hear it well enough to navigate. So my question is can you take a Garmin GPS with bluetooth capability and pair it to a cell phone Bluetooth earpiece? I'm thinking maybe that might work for him.

Don't know about the voice directions but they are brand specific as to which blue tooth setup they will communicate with for phone. Are you going to the show at Crown Point this week end ?

Walter: Yes I'm going. My heart ain't in it, but I have to try to sell a couple guns. I'm going Sat. morning. Maybe Sunday too if I don't sell this stuff. You going?

Is there a earphone jack on the unit?

Plantronics (sp?) is one of the the names in top quality equipment like that (David Clarke is the other). Check with the customer service line on one of these headphone manufacturers. They have in ear custom fit type units that are professional quality, and are worth looking into.

edit ti add: they probably have the bluetooth stuff as well

I haven't advised him as to what to buy yet. This guy is totally tech uncompliant. I halfway think it's a ploy by him to maintain connections with others. As in "help me out will ya". I ain't Dr. Phil I keep telling him. Nothing has been purchased yet. He does need help getting around anywhere outside of town. I don't think GPS's have jacks on them now. I'm thinking if you can pair a Bluetooth earpiece with a Garmin (I like Garmin) maybe it would help him out.

Thanks m1gunner, Jim

the Bluetooth capability is to enable hands free cell phone use; the audio from the Garmin is via a built in mini speaker and even at full volume is hard to hear. my Garmin Nuvi does not have a headphone jack

I've seen adverts for a new Garmin brand cell phone with built in GPS/Camera. When using the camera it logs the GPS coordinates to the memory card. I would think most cell phones manufactured today are bluetooth enabled. Have him check around at some of the cell providers. They should be able to tell him if the voice commands from the GPS can be heard through the bluetooth.
