We have bears out here, people don't treat it like any kind of a big deal. You don't bother them and they don't bother you.
They do make a mess out of dumpsters.

It is pretty common to spot some small black bear in our area, they see them swimming the river. I've found scat a time or two from them feasting on the farmers crops around us. Hell Ole Miss has a black bear as a mascott now that the colonel is officially a racist!

Just a quick aside: A few years back a guy proudly showed me the cell phone photo of the "wild turkey" he'd spotted in the city that morning. He outranked me by a lot in the organization we worked for, so I just said, "Imagine that!" or something innocuous, and refrained from telling him he'd photographed a turkey vulture. By that time I was just too old to "speak truth to power."

Regarding Gunter, the Pyrenees: When I was doing my bear research, my GSP Maggie went out with me when we trapped a bear, one time. Once he was knocked out, I let her out of the car. She sniffed the bear and went back to the car and went to sleep. (She tried to eat the landowner's cat, though!).
Late one night however, she did warn me of an untagged bear nearby while I was taking radio positions.

Update: Our young urban bear somehow got a broken leg and was clearly suffering. He therefor was put down this weekend. He may have been hit by a car or truck.
Earlier in the week he was photographed having an evening snack in a back yard.

No bear here around Baltimore yet, but they have made their way out of Western MD down into DC. Of course, before 10 or so years ago, bear were only a rumor in extreme Western MD, so that means they're spreading pretty fast. Lots more coyote sightings in these parts, though. Who'd ever have thought of coyote on the shores of the Chesapeake?

....but bears are usually safe!
And it is only some neighborhoods that are really dangerous. The closer to Bucks County you are the safer you will be. This is true.
You will not find me hanging out Broad St & Germantown Ave early Saturday morning. Not since I retired at least.

We have black bears in MS now, illegal to kill a bear or an alligator. Why bring something back that was killed off for a reason.
