Howdy,
I have a .32 break top 5 shot that belonged to my Great Grandmother and I was wondering when it was made. The serial number is 151817. It is chrome with a black handle and a grip safety. Thanks in advance ~

Greetings! helping identify an heirloom handgun seems a great interest of this forum! There are folks here quite knowledgeable about such guns. It would be a terrific help if you could post photos, and forum members will likely be interested in any family stories or "legends" associated with the gun (think of it as the "quid pro quo" for the information you receive back). Good luck on your quest for more information!

Welcome.I'll try to look it up and report back, but for starters,I can tell you that it is not chrome, but nickel.

Update: I'll have to defer to the others here who are expert on the early guns.

Welcome aboard! The ser.# which you got off the butt(?)
would likely make it a .32 Safety Hammerless 2nd Model.
I got out my Std. Catalog of S&W, 3rd edition to make the following guess.
I'm going just by the info you posted. Possibly from 1906-07.
Really would like to see pics, esp. as the people who know what they
are talking about will need pics to nail down this firearm's lineage.
If in good condition, they are good shooters, too.
