I recently purchased this S&W 65 Lady Smith though it was badly stored and suffered from severe pitting and corrosion. I returned it to S&W for refinishing, fully expecting it to be left with unsightly pitting. After a few weeks it was returned looking new. I found this almost miraculous. Their service was fast, professional, and reasonably priced.

Thanks for sharing. It is this kind of information that makes this web site so valuable.

Stocks

I may be completely wrong but these do not appear to be the original stocks, did they replace them or did you? Was the exchange voluntary or involuntary? Have heard that the exchange was customary in times gone by. Curiosity only. The refinish is top notch, it is really good. They do perform wonders. Congratulations!

Smitholdtimer,
Yes, they are the original stocks. They really fit better than the photo shows. You probably see some high areas in the frame.

I have sent numerous guns to Smith, some of which were wrecks. I have always felt that I got more than I paid for. I see no reason to send a gun anywhere else.

SW357NM, thanks a bunch for posting this info. It is great to read in light of the fact that I've just recently purchased my first S&W firearm. :D

Thanks for sharing your information. Over the 30+ years I have been interested in Smiths, I have heard only positive comments about Smith & Wesson service. It is good to know that when you spend a little more for the firearm, you get the service along with it.

Glad you're pleased but I'm not surprised at S&W doing a fine job. My one experience with them was outstanding. Don

I'm curious - how much does S&W typically charge to refinish a revolver like that?

It varies a bit, and all of mine have been blue, but about $150.00 plus shipping. Now I think if you send from an FFL (which you don't have to do if it's going to the manufacturer or a gunsmith) you get a discount.

The good news is that when they put it back together they do it right and replace any out-of-spec parts if they have them. All you pay for is the parts since they already had the gun apart. Also they will call you and discuss things if need be. They are running out of parts for older guns (like .500 triggers) but they still have a lot. I have a 58 that was a total disaster and when they got finished with it it has the finish of a gun from the fiftes. In other words you could use it for a shaving mirror. They had to move the trademark to the other side but that's OK. There are pictures of it somewhere on this forum. If anybody's interested I will repost it. I'll see if I can find the thread on my pre 29 and post a link.

Here's the link.

In addition to the rifinish, they set the barrel back and recut the throat and replaced a number of parts. Total cost was $220 if I remember correctly. I swear it also got a trigger job, which I did not ask or pay for. I told my son it's one of the ones he was not to sell ever. It shoots like a dream.

Fed Ex p/u my 629-3 with a timing problem up on a Tues. They got it Weds. I called the following Tues (Mon being Memorial Day) to see if they had an estimate to fix the problem. He said it was taken care of and my gun was going out today. Weds, one week from Smith getting my 629-3 (with a Holiday in between) Fed Ex delivered my weapon to my door. It was cleaned, with a new barrel installed (loose barrel was cause of the ejector rod dragging), and a total going over and replacing of any worn parts. It was also wrapped in wax paper.:) Oh and yes. I noticed my pachmyars had split and when I called Smith about a replacment set of grips to purchase they said they would put a new pair of grips in the mail. No charge.:D
The best Customer Sevice I have ever experienced in my life. Apparently this is par for the course for Smith.

LSG Manufacturing

In August of 2007 I purchased a new S&W 686-6 Plus. I was getting inconsistent firing pin strikes, resulting in multiple failures to fire. Living relatively close to Comanche, TX., I called Frank Smith at LSG Manufacturing (an authorized Smith & Wesson Warranty Center). Frank immediately offered to send a Fed-Ex call tag, or if I preferred, to bring the gun to him. I opted for the second choice.

In only a few minutes, Frank had determined what the problem was. He did a little filing on the extractor star, replaced the firing pin, and checked the timing. The pistol has performed flawlessly since.

This past Spring, the ejector rod screw began backing out, and I inadvertantly cross-threaded the part. This was totally my fault, and I told Frank the same when I spoke with him. Once again, after the trip to Comanche, Frank has everything repaired and running smoothly. The parts and labor only came to $39.

I have always praised Smith & Wesson for their customer service, and in particular, Frank Smith at LSG Manufacturing.

I've posted this before but will do so again. In my many years of gun ownership, I've never found customer service such as that of Smith & Wesson. They are outstanding.

HEY SWID, I HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE WITH A MTN. GUN THAT I SENT BACK FOR A REFINISH. IT CAME BACK WITH AN UNBELIEVABLE TRIGGER AT NO COST TO ME.

Thanks again for the comments, folks. I am ecstatic with the tack-driving performance of my new JM625-8 and it is good to hear these kinds of reports in case I ever need some factory help with it...
