Those of us with small hands (my last Chief called them "Girlie Hands") will pay good money to get the right grip on our revolvers. Being the cheap so-and-so I am, I elected to round-butt my guns myself. A friend lent me a set of RB Magnas to use as a template, and it was a pretty straightforward process. I scribed the outline on the frame, and went to the bench grinder, in 20 minutes I had removed all the metal necessary, and finished it off with a Dremel and files. Heat buildup is not an issue because the grip frame isn't subject to a lot of stress. I recently did the conversion on a battered old Model 15-3 and it turned out rather well. It's a much simpler process on stainless guns, but a little cold blue can keep the gun presentable. The serial number on the butt was unaffected.
Once the grinding was done an old set of Cocobolo grips was reshaped to a perfect fit. I only had about $200 in the gun, and it was mechanically fine, just lacking in appearance. Some day I will have it bead-blasted and reblued, and it will go to my daughter, who has "girlie hands" like mine!
