In what year did Smith & Wesson quit serial numbering their grips to the gun?

On the service stocks, sometime in the late 1970s. Very few Target stocks were numbered.

Actually, the practice persisted intermittantly beyond that. I have one of the last model 34's made and it's magnas are numbered to the frame.
