Having a Smith 4 inch 45C mountain revolver, I would like to try quality, square butt wood grips rather than the round butt rubber it came with. The rubber is ok and never been an issue for me, but with most of my guns being wood, think I like the wood better. My gun is the 625-7 and without the J-loc. This is one nice revolver that shoots better than my expectations if loading Unique powder along with my hand cast RCBS-270 bullets. If anyone has a suggestion on grips it is much appreciated.

If you want the 50's classic S&W look member Kurac (Culina) makes smooth target grips in various woods that convert the Round butt to Square , He advertises on our FS forum .

Various other manufacturers make them as well like Herrets, Ahrends, Eagle etc.

The 45 Colt doesnt kick like the 44 Mag version but if your shooting HOT loads and dont like a red palm people have suggested a rubber grip that covers the backstrap like Pachmayers or the S&W X frame grips that come OEM on the new .460 and .500 Magnums.

Depends on whether you are more interested in lookin' or shootin'.
If lookin' is top priority, you might consider the several kinds of Ahrends grips available (I have two pair for sale on this forum).
If you are more interested in shootin', look at the Pachmayr grips. I'd suggest the Gripper or the Decelerator (same as the Gripper but softer rubber compound).
I have the same gun as yours and I have Decelerators on mine. They are comfortable and (I think) look cool as well. These grips are the ones that Colt put on the Anaconda and some Pythons in the last few years of production.

Altamont has reasonably priced round to square conversion grips. Can get in different colors and configurations. 625 w/ them. Bob

I USE AHREND'S SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS ON MY MOUNTAIN GUNS (AND ANY OTHER S&W THAT CAME FROM THE FACTORY WITH THOSE FINGER GROOVED GOODYEARS). IMHO, THEY LOOK GOOD, ARE REASONABLY PRICED, AND THEY FIT MY MEDIUM SIZED HANDS….

Thanks everyone for the great info and photos too! - now thinking of those decelerator grips never having owned any; maybe I need both wood and rubber as I do like shooting my 625-7 often!

I've been using S&W K frame grips for their X frames on my 629-4, works well for reducing felt recoil and quick second shots.

The K frame S&W rubber grips will fit on the 629 round butt mountain gun?? Pics please???

I bought Crimson Trace Hog Hunter grips for my 329PD and loved them so much I bought another set to rotate among the other .44s, including my mountain guns. Even if you don't use the laser (I don't), the grip is a great recoil reducer.

Here is my 625-7 wearing Ahrends Tactical Round to Square in Cordia wood. I shoot 270 grain LSWC at about 950-1000 fps and it is fine on my size 11 hands (I can just palm a basketball).

These grips are what I use on my M29MG, as the wood grips made my hand bleed generously after a single cylinder of medium-to-warm 240grainers.

I believe some early fitment issues reported were with used sets of the grips. If new, the X-frame Hogue grips fit the RB N-frame nicely.

They also tame felt recoil nicely, much like the very good grips on the Ruger SRH Alaskan.

Not the round-to-square grips (stocks) the OP mentioned he is looking for, but these are what I put on my 629 Mountain Gun in 44 Magnum.

They are from Altmont grips and are their rosewood color. The little brother in the picture is my 640 Pro Series also sporting a set of Altmont grips.

Recoil?? Yup...

These grips give more felt recoil when compared to the rubber Hogue grips which came on the gun. The big difference is they feel great in my hand and I like the looks. If I want to shoot a lot of full power loads at the range I can put the original Hogues back on.

My friend calls this gun the "Flinchmaster 2000" and that was after he shot it wearing the Hogues!

Andy05, thanks for posting the decelerator grip pic, ordered a pair just last night in hopes they are better in my hand than stock rubber. Still wanting wood grips at some point so everyone's pics are very helpful there, thanks again.

My pleasure.
One caveat: If you are expecting grips that are perfectly formed and completely symmetrical, you may be a bit disappointed. I have bought several pair of Gripper and Decelerator grips recently. It appears to me that either the molds they are using to make these have worn, the grips require some hand trimming after molding, or maybe both. Some of the grips I received looked very well molded and if trimmed, it was well done. A couple of them looked like they were inexpertly trimmed and did not look so hot. I returned one pair to the vendor and the second pair, asked Pachmayr to replace with a good pair (which they did).
The main attraction for me is that they fit my hand well and for powerful cartridges like 357 magnum and 45 Colt (I have no 44 magnums), they make the gun pleasent to shoot for extended sessions without hand damage or pain. This for me is a BIG selling point for these grips, and is probably the reason that Colt started putting them on Anacondas and some Pythons.
For my Model 617, I would not need grips like these. Wood or Hogues would be just fine.
Oh...and by the way, I did grind the end of the mounting screw on this grip so that it would not contact my hand. You may or may not need to.
