I am really liking the Culina grips on the 29-3 I picked up this week and I believe that the grips that came with the 29-3 may be from earlier than the 1988 time period the revolver is from. They were also covered in some kind of lacquer or shellac type finish that was slathered on thick enough in spots to drip and dry that way. It also had areas that were thin to no coverage. Piss poor job of application.
I took advantage of the cooler temps from Harvey coming in and spent some time in the garage stripping the old finish and working on the grips a bit. I started with Formby's Furniture Refinisher, cleaned that off with mineral spirits. Cleaned off the MS with Simple Green and finished up with my air compressor to get the moisture out of the crooks and crannies. Spent some time with some 220 grit lightly sanding them around the checkering and put them away inside to dry overnight. This morning I brought out the BLO, man do I like them smell of that stuff and gave it a couple coats over an hour or so span. between coats they got a rub down with furniture grade steel wool dipped in BLO. Wiped off with a towel then a spritz or two with the compressor to get the excess out of the tight spots and a final wipedown. They were good enough to temporarily go on the Highway Patrolman that will be their home while I took pics. They will come back off and get a few more coats of BLO over the next few days.
I did not want to send them out to our grip guru because they would come back looking too good to go on this particular revolver. I think they will work just fine when I get finished and let them sit to dry for 2-3 weeks.
