Grips for 625-8 looking to replace

I have a 625-8 with houge grips looking to replace them with something else.. The 625 has a screw mount on the bottom with the new grips can I remove that mount or does it stay maybe wood or packmayer?

Don't worry about it.
No problem.
The grips you are describing currently on your revolver are the Hogue Monogrip and they come with an adapter bracket that clips onto the pins that protrude from the bottom of the grip frame and allows the grips to mount with a single screw in the bottom of the grip. Any other style of grip you order will come with the mounting hardware you will need. Be sure to order N-frame size grips for a ROUND BUTT or a round butt to square butt conversion. Do not remove the pins that protrude laterally from the sides of the bottom of the grip frame. Your new grips with have small holes in the base that fit over those pins.

For what it's worth I tried 3 different grips on my 625-8 and found the Hogue Monogrip the most comfortable for me.

So that screw mount is proprietary to Hogue. It has to be removed to work with most other grips. The way I have always removed it is with a flat bladed screwdriver. You have to be really careful with the screwdriver to not scratch your gun while you pop the mount blade over one side of the pin. Then it's a little tricky to get the other side of the mount over the other end of the pin without the first side getting back on the pin. Hold that end off the pin with your thumb while you pop the other side off with the screwdriver. Go slow and careful and methodical and you'll get it. I usually save the screw mount by stuffing it into the Houge grip I am replacing for when you want to use it again. Those Hogue grips aren't so bad once you get used to them.

The pin that remains fits into a small hole on each half of the replacement stocks.

If you are going with rubber replacement grips, the type that I have come to favor is the Pachmayr Diamond Pro. For this model you have to use a punch to remove the pin. The Diamond Pro has a screw that fits through the hole where the pin was.

If you are looking for some wood stocks, what price range are you interested in? Because the wood stocks I find most comfortable run around $200 or more (Culina targets). For around $80 or so, Kim Ahrends makes some nice round and round to square conversion stocks too and if less than that I have seen numerous posts here about some Thailand grips that seem to be pretty good too. I want to say the Thai grips run less than $50.

My 625-8 is the top revolver in the photo. I went with Herbert Jordan Troopers. I run them on all of my N frames, and my M69 L frame. I can't find rubber grips comfortable, nor any with finger grooves. The Herrett's work great with either moon clips, or when I use Autorim brass with speed loaders. The fit is worth the cost to me.

Yes, the screw will come with the Gripper grips (Pachmayr). They will come with everything you need to install them.

In my experience aftermarket stocks/grips come with all the mounting hardware you'll need to mount them.

I like the Compac Pro shape of those. First time I've seen that style rendered in wood.

Retired in 2001 - I can certainly appreciate not liking the looks of the Hogue Monogrips. I have a 29-3 Classic Hunter that came with a set of those from the factory.

I always hated the looks of them, but after shooting it with them on it, and then trying a couple of others, I went back to the Hogues. Not just because they are the stock grips for this gun (though that is certainly a factor), but also because for shooting a magnum revolver with significant recoil & muzzle flip, they are the best I've found.

The rubber absorbs recoil, the pebble texture, palm swell and deep finger grooves all help to give enough grip to help tame the muzzle flip and torque, to significantly improve control. They are U-G-L-Y, but the factory put them on there for a reason - namely because they really WORK.

So, bottom line: I learned to get past the "squished handful of tar" look of them and learned to actually like them (for shooting - not for looks).

Here are my English Walnut Culina target stocks installed on my 27-5, to give you an idea of what the Culina target stocks look like. This is a square butt gun, but John and Jennifer also make these targets in a round to square butt conversion also. I have a set of round to square conversions on order right now to put on my 629-3 Classic.

Here are my Smith .45's

The 25-13 (converted by TK to accept moon clips) is wearing VZ G10 RB finger groove grips

The 625-2 has a Hogue RB grip. Not sure of the wood, but I believe that it's Pau Ferro

The 625-8 PC has a Hogue grip from the X-frame emergency pack

The 25-2 has an old Hogue grip that I have been told (by someone at Hogue) was actually made by Guy Hogue. I believe that it's rosewood.

Also a good choice. The Grippers aren't much to look at, but with the palm swell, covered backstrap, shallow finger grooves, and light checkering, they are GREAT for shooting.

I have a set to fit just about every revolver I own.
