Grips for a 29-10 N Square that cover the back strap?

I have taken my .44 mag 6.5" barrel 29 classic out twice now. Once with the factory grips and once with a set of Hogue wood pau ferro checkered wood. In both cases where the upper part of the grip meets the frame, it chewed up the webbing between my thumb and index. I moved my hand down the grip a bit to keep my web away and I can shoot all day as I don't mind the recoil -- especially compared to my .460 -- but holding it high in my palm is odd-feeling.

The pachmayr decelerators fit terribly. This is a square butt so I can't use the 500s or I'd get a set as those are great on my .460 bit those are round... I'm happy to sport wood, also, if there is something that covers the back and goes all the up the little saddle without a sharp edge to bite. In the end, it's not about rubber for recoil reduction but proper fit...

Pachmayr Presentation grips would be my first suggestion. I've used them on all my magnums and the do exactly what you're asking about. Not very pretty, but they work well for shooting. I've had pretty good luck with Decelerators myself. If yours fit poorly maybe they are damaged or defective.

Unfortunately the ones os2firefox posted won't work for your gun - they are round butt to square butt conversion grips and you said yours is already a square-butt. The only rubber grips Hogue offers that will fit your gun is the monogrip below - and unfortunately it isn't a closed backstrap. However, they are great for taming recoil in my experience.

I have the same problem, needing a filler behind the top of the back strap.
I have a set of Herrett's wood grips on my 24-6 that work well. They are custom made so it takes a while to get them.

Vintage smooth targets fixed the problem for me. These grips are much wider than the original Altamonts, that come on the 29-10. For my hand, the extra width spreads out the recoil, eliminating the "bite" between thumb and forefinger. Anything covering the backstrap would make for a difficult reach for my stubby trigger finger.

Nill has standard models that cover the back strap of a square-butt N-frame and the workmanship is excellent. That said, they are expensive, but so are the old smooth targets. I'd probably start with the smooth targets and see if they work for you. They'll be a big improvement on what the gun came with, IMO. If you don't think they are what you want, you can sell them and move on.

If you just want the best shaped and most comfortable grip for shooting (not looking), then I agree with what was said earlier. Get the Pachmayr Presentations. I've been shooting .44s a long time and never found anything better, but they're nothing to look at.

Instead of paying $150 or so to see if full coverage will help why not just get a set from Thailand for like $40. Try Jaruwan.p as a vendor. Shipping is slow though usually 3 weeks or so.

I find these to fit very well on my K frames.

We once had a trooper with extra large hands. The Jordan Troopers by Herrett cover the blackstrap, adding to the length of pull. Bill Jordan had really large hands and his grip design solved the problem you are having for him. Google them for a look see.

I agree with M29since14. I have a beautiful set of smooth factories that date to the seventies that are wider and spread the recoil out more. Even so, I do my best work with the Pachmayer rubber grips. My hands are not large.

If you look on ebay, Jaruwan.p does have a set of N frame square butt that cover the backstrap for <$50. However I wonder how these will work given the amount of space the backstrap wood will move your hand back; hence moving you finger further from the trigger. Might be worth a try.

Here is a photo of one of my Jordan Troopers on my 629-3. The wood is California Claro and came from the personal wood collection of Harold Garrison, the gentleman that used to make all of the custom handgun stocks for Herrett's until his passing. He was a friend, I miss him and all of his wonderful stories he would tell about hunting.

I found an old pair of Pachmayr Presentation grips on ebay and it made a significant improvement over the 29-10 factory grips.

IMHO the Pachmayr Presentation is a very good "universal" grip. Without fingergrooves it should fit most hands and there was a time, when you could get them in "small" (1. pic) and "large"...

Of course wood as these beautiful Trooper's from Joni (post #10) or some Nill's...

Thanks all. I'm going to give the presentation grips a go. I don't really have big hands so I don't want to go too big and regret it especially with some of the expensive options out there.

Tape around that thumb knuckle. Your original grip was correct. You want your wrist to be as close to the barrel center line as possible.

Just an FYI, as far as I have been able to tell in side by side comparisons, the difference between the small & large presentation grips is that the large ones are about 3/16" longer on the bottom. They appear to be the same size and shape otherwise.
