I have what I think is a NIB 49. The serial # on the grips do not match the gun. Were these changed out? Are all grips matched to the gun?
thanks

The 49-1s came out around 1988 and they stopped numbering grips somewhere in the mid-70s so the grips on your 49 may not have been numbered or matched to it. But, if they are numbered to another gun, they are probably not original to yours.

Are the numbers on the grips even close to your serial number? There is the possibilty that the assembler was looking for 238 but grabbed 288 (you get the idea) by mistake.

i don't know if this helps. I have a 30-1 that was originally stamped Mod. 36 then over stamped 30-1. I got a factory letter that it was shipped as a 30-1 on Oct. 20, 1970 as a 30-1. It has the grips number to the gun.

Not to hijack this thread, but w/myellowc5's permission, what method was used to mark the grips? Was it always stamped or etched? How many characters of the s/n were used. It seems dated grips w/ matching s/n could be easy to "fake" if someone was of that mindset!

My 28-2 grips are marked with, if my memory serves me correctly, the last 4 or 5 numbers of the s/n!

Thanks, myellowc5!

I checked my grips, one is imprinted and does not match the serial number. The other is plain with no numbers. I know the gun is in perfect condition and appears unfired with mfg date 1981 and it is pinned. Maybe the grips were changed at some point but the ones on it are mint.

...How many characters of the s/n were used.
They were marked with the numbers after the letter.

S123456 would have 123456, maybe in two rows of three, depending on time frame.
12K3456 would have only 3456

Only the right panel was stamped with the serial number. The left one would not have any serial number in it.

S&W never wasted anything. There have been examples of the factory taking the numbered magnas off of a revolver when it was ordered with trargets and using them on a different revolver, maybe having both serial numbers on the right panel.
