My Ruger Max was laying on the desk and I didn't notice that some Mt Dew had spilled and the gun was laying in a puddle of it. In only about 15 minutes a large patch of the finish was gone off the side of the slide. I covered it with a sharpie until I get a chance to get the slide refinished. Ruger has a poor finish or Mt Dew is strong stuff. What is the cost of a slide refinish now days and what would be interesting and different.

Hard chrome the slide for a pinto look?
If it was mine I would re-blue the area that the finished was removed with cold blue. If you follow the directions exactly you can get a okay bluing job with it.

I feel your pain. When I was in college I once left a nice Colt Series 70 Government Model on a table and Lucille the Labrador knocked over a glass of orange juice which caused the gun to sit in an OJ puddle overnight. Even in that short time it was pitted and awful looking.
I couldn't get used to it and took it to a gun show to trade it off. One old boy nodded sagely and said: Blood gun.
I said: I'm pretty sure it was Minute Maid.

You used a Sharpie, well you're done. Seriously though you should keep in mind the cost of the pistol before you spend to refinish. The cold blue sounds viable. Sweet carbonated soda will remove rust.

Just paid 75 clams for ceracoat on a Series 70 slide that had deep pitting from previous dumb owner. Local gunsmith does super job of vapor blasting and coating. Added Mepro 3 dot sights and some inside work, will be one of my carry pieces.

L.T.M. Refinishing is about 50 miles from here and will do a slide for $85 plus shipping. The have several choices of colors

Are we talking Mtn. Dew, or are we talking......"Mtn. Dew"? I have tried some of the latter stuff that would take the chrome off a Cadillac bumper.

It was the green stuff sugar free. If it was the back in the wood made stuff it would ate the finish off the desk also
Coca Cola will take the corrosion off battery posts . . .

Sometime in the 70s my brother and I were standing in a parking lot. I forget what I was drinking, but he had a Coke. A little old lady straight out of Central Casting walked up and with a stern look told him "Don't drink that, Sonny...it takes the rust off bumpers". Of course that was when bumpers could rust.

I will offer it is strong stuff. As noted, I live in Winchester, VA, the home of WHITE HOUSE apple products. It was relayed to me several years ago that M Dew was used to clean the copper kettles used in their manufacturing process. In addition, I have met more than one, shade tree slim, who noted they use M DEW to clean the radiators of their cars & trucks, The older ones I guess.
I would never touch the stuff. JMHO
