Can someone tell me who is a good person or shop to re-blue a gun. I have searched the I-net but only found online home use stuff. I am looking for a professional job.

Ford's refinishing is the best.Smith & Wesson seem to be able to once again polish nice ,but they use a delicate blueing formula that can't hold up to some of the more popular solvents like Hoppes #9 and other ammonia based products.

Instead of "bluing" search "gun re-finishing", you will find quite a bit more. Ford's does do good work though and is a known quantity.

Run a S&W Forum search and narrow it to just the Gunsmithing forum; there are many threads, several recent, asking the same question with excellent names of well-reputed firearms finishers listed. ;)

I have used Midwest Gun Works to re-blue a few long guns and they did an absolutely perfect high quality job. One gun was a Browning T Bolt that was severely damaged by "Salt-wood" and the other was a Marlin from the 40's which was really in need of a new finish. I do not know of they do hand guns, but you might want to give them a call and find out. I'd highly recommend them! By the way the entire process from me to them and back took less than 3 months - unlike some refinishers that have more than 12 month wait times.

I TRIED to use Ford's once and made repeated attempts to contact them for pricing, instructions for shipping and lead times but was unable to get them to return any of my calls. Guess they have so much business they didn't really care. While I have only heard good things about their work, I won't deal with a Company that treats me like I am an annoyance or that they are doing me a favor by responding to my inquires - which they NEVER did! There ARE other Company's out there doing fine work that treat their costumer's with respect and professionalism so there actually IS A CHOICE.

For Colt's - believe it or not Colt STILL does a stellar royal blue and case color job - actually they do it better than ever! I do not like Smiths current re-bluing process and agree with Laketime's post above.

It's not the bluing which is difficult, but the metal polishing prior to bluing which is what costs the big bucks. Most any city of any size (and even some small towns) will have at least one gunsmith which can perform a reasonable bluing job. But do not expect factory quality when it comes to polishing. That takes a lot of experience.

I have had excellent experience with Mel Doyle in St Maries ID. Quick turn around too. Sorry I don't have his contact info handy.
