I thought I would take the liberty to summarize a number of definitions of gun types that have been floating around a number of the threads these past few days:
1) Mountain Gun (l. montem tormentarii) - a handgun into which a pile of money is poured to have it look better than great, improve its utility, and ensure its ease of carry while running around the mountains tucked away in a easy to access holster displaying the same level of style and utility, but with enough knock-down power to ward off threats of the 4 or 2 leg variety!(Credit:Various)
2) BBQ Gun (l. posui tormentarii) - a handgun into which a pile of money is poured (usually greater than the above mentioned Mountain Gun), that has a multitude of fancy scratches, upgraded handles and a holster hand tooled by a well-known leather smith. It too has the power to knock-down threats of the 4 and 2 legged variety, but is more commonly deployed if the meat decides to jump up off the grill, or to demonstrate the shooting skills of the owner or the craftsmanship of the pistol smith.(Credit:Various)
3) Weenie Roast Gun (l. pusillus assa tormentarii ) - a handgun which is a "Nice" gun, just not up to standard required of Bar-B-Que gun. (Credit:Bill)
4) Canoe Gun (Canadian Species)(l. linter tormentarii) - a cross between a Mountain Gun and a CCW Gun. These guns pack and are light to carry, but must be capable of dealing with bears. They must also be concealable as it is illegal to open carry, and long guns are not allowed in National or Provincial parks Generally the guns are stainless,(although not always as correctly pointed out by budrichard) as they are usually subjected to water and dampness (and occasionally snow). They need to be accessible at chest height during portages, but also be carried in a flexible manner so as to be reached while paddling.(Credit: C Broad Arrow)
5) BUG- Back Up Gun (also called "BUG")(l. patrocinium tormentarii) - a handgun whose primary characteristics are conceal-ability and ease of carry. Power, is secondary, and money spent is to make it more reliable in a pinch or to make it more easily concealed and/or deployed. The BUG is usually an understudy for the primary weapon of many LEOs, but for many CCW holders, the BUG is actually the primary weapon on a daily basis, so it is generally chosen carefully, but not subject to the *bling* other categories of specialty guns acquire. (Credit: Green Frog aka Froggie)
6) Truck Guns (l. dolor tormentarii) –A rough and ready large caliber handgun (.357, .44,.45 etc.) multipurpose utility firearm able to stand up to the abuse of being bounced and knocked around while resident in a moving vehicle. Readily accessible for quick deployment against hogs, snakes, gators, bears or animals in need of being put down in the event of collisions with trucks and automobiles(moose, deer, elk). The Truck Gun is a direct descendent of the “Horse Pistol”. (Credit:Jack Flash)
Sub-specie of the Truck Gun is the Boat Gun, but in recent years this has evolved into a separate species as men have convinced their wives of the need for a more specific tool to deal with environmental conditions and threats posed by wet environments.
7) Boat Gun (l. navi tormentarii) - a large caliber handgun for multipurpose use (self-defence, sharks, snake/gators, signaling device). The Boat Gun should be resistant to rust and corrosion as it is often used in dealing with waterborne threats and situations. The Boat Gun can be stainless, but this is not a pre-requisite for being classified in this category. Like the Truck Gun it is expected to take some bouncing around and even some hard knocks and still shoot to POA when the chips are down.(Credit: Rare Breed)
7a) Gator Gun (l. alligator Mississippiensis tormentarii) - a gun used in the swamps and salt marshes of the gulf coast as protection against or for the harvesting of alligators. (Credit: kcub)
8) Tractor Gun (l. firmam tractor tormentarii – Texas) – an emerging species recently discovered in Texas. Generally found to fire the .410 in self-defence when your mower turns over a nest of nasties. Recent developments in this species include the S&W Governor.(Credit:quinn)
9) Safe Queen (l.tutum regina tormentarii) – Like a debutant at a cotillion, a Safe Queen is a gun of high value, that is pretty in the eye of the owner, is handled with kid gloves, often taken from its “safe” environ, fondled and admired, but never shot, ridden or put away “wet”. Such guns are often found at the top of the owners “never to be sold” list. Generally these guns are accidently discovered at shows, pawn shops, or inherited.
10) Evidence Gun (l. testimonium tormentarii) - As one who likes to swap and trade I sometimes run into the "evidence gun". It is recognized by the need to pick it up with two fingers while turning it over looking for absent serial numbers and sawed off parts. Proper etiquette and common sense demand a quick wipe down before returning it and backing away. These show little money invested and signs of poor care and a rough life. To be avoided and seldom seen on these pages but sometimes can jump a category to "truck gun".(Credit: needmorestuff)
11) Good Neighbor Gun (l. bonum proximum tormentarii) -a accurate rifle (or handgun) chambered for the utilitarian and quiet .22 lr used to cull the backyard of pests, varmints and depredators at various hours of the day or night, without attracting undue attention or inspection by the neighbors. (Credit: Cleanbreak)
12) Bar Gun (l. talea tormentarii ) - not "bear" gun, although I know that the word "bear" is often pronounced "bar" in the South as in "there I was at the convenience store with a Nehi soda and a Moonpie when a big ole black bar ambled into the store and eyed my Moonpie") A bar gun is what one carries into bars in rough neighborhoods -- it must be concealable, desirable calibers are .25 ACP or .32 ACP since the bar gun is for "display" to a perceived threat, must be very shiny, with either faux ivory or mother of pearl grips, and able to withstand spilled beer and cheap lipstick, and it is imperative that a bar gun cost less than $200. Bar guns are not intended for actual use but are intended for "flashing" to a potential rival for the affections of the blonde at the end of the bar -- flashing will establish that you are a sophisticated "ladies man" as you sip your Courvoisier cognac.
Tradition in most drinking establishments is that bar guns should have unreliable safety's -- this enhances the "display" or "flashing" experience if the bar gun accidentally discharges into the floor or into the big mirror behind the bartender. Given the penchant for unreliable safety's, this is why desired bar guns are in .25 or .32 caliber -- in the event that one accidentally discharges one's bar gun into one's crotch, the damage inflicted is much less than if one were carrying a .38 +P or .44 Special. (Credit: COL Jagdog).
13) Squatch Gun (l. gigantopithecus Canadensis tormentarii) –a large caliber hard hitting handgun for either hunting or defending against Sasquatches and anything else that is big and can kill, eat, cause bodily harm or Scare the bejesus out of you!!!!. (Credit: i.hunt)
14) Zombie Gun (l. immortui tormentarii) – a long gun or handgun with a high magazine capacity and high degree of accuracy capable of fending off potentially large hoards of the undead. Accuracy is highly desirable in that head shots are necessary. Caliber is not critical although larger calibers do provide a more satisfying splatter pattern. (Credit: BCDWYO)
15) Hand Cannon (l. manu tormento) - a large caliber, hard hitting handgun that will nearly break your wrist and scare the people shooting next to you, make children in the next county cry, and cause your target to drop dead with fear. The .460 XVR , 500 Magnum, are examples of S&W hand cannons. (Credit: Engine49guy)
16) Holy Grail Gun a.k.a. Dream Gun (l. Sancti Grail tormentarii a.k.a. Somnium tormentarii) – a handgun that you want but has eluded you for many years despite your willingness to give up a variety of appendages in exchange for the gun. Sometimes called the Dream Gun it is often seen just beyond your grasp as you sleep. It defies definition as it is something special for each person.
17) Walking Around Gun (l. Ambulantes tormentarii) - a gun for just walking around must be sturdy and ready to go.Minimum caliber shall be 38 preferably with hollow points. The WAG revolver shall be carried in a holster costing no more than $5 and has to have been purchased at a local gun show.
Finish on the walking around gun can be blued with rust and corrosion permitted. Stainless steel guns optional. The walking around gun is for providing a modicum of security when walking around, example walking around your property perimeter. The TAW a.k.a. Throw Away Gun, but with greater purpose.(Credit:Frank46)
18) Throw Away Gun (TAW) (l. Mittent Tolle tormentarii) - a handgun or revolver, which is kept and intended to be fired once or only during one incident, usually for illegal purposes, and then discarded so as to remove suspicion from the weapon's user. Serial numbers may be filed off and the gun is usually unregistered and illegal to even own, and care is always taken to not leave prints on the gun so that it can't be traced back to the owner that way should it ever be discovered. Usually kept somewhere hidden and safe as a "Plan B" should the owner ever need to have access to a gun that can't be traced back to him. (Credit: Kelly Green Wishes to remain annonymous...for obvious reasons...this description is meant in jest and for educational, and entertainment purposes only).
Other variations of this gun include the Throw Down Gun (l.destruere tormentarii) or Drop Gun (l. stillabunt tormentarii). These are carried for the purpose of bolstering your claim of self defense. When you discover the guy you just shot was unarmed you covertly throw or drop this normally cheap and usually broken firearm next to the body. A staple of cheap detective novels. (Credit:jdh)
19) Evidence Gun (l. testimonium tormentarii) - the "evidence gun" is recognized by the need to pick it up with two fingers while while turning it over looking for absent serial numbers and sawed off parts. Proper ediquette and commmon sense demand a quick wipe down before returning it and backing away. These show little money invested and signs of poor care and a rough life. To be avoided and seldom seen on these pages but some times can jump a catagory to "truck gun" or "throw away gun".(Credit:needsmorestuff)
20) Bubba Gun (l.Bubba tormentarii-there is no latin word for Bubba) - the Bubba Gun is a gun that started life as a really good piece, but in an effort to "make it better", it became something other than what it was intended. Hence the phrase, "Man, he has really Bubba'd up that gun!". (Credit:JCS&W)
21) Texas Derringer (l. Texas sinu telum) - a revolver with a barrel length of no more than 4 inches in calibers of 41 mag or 44 mag. Meant for easy concealment, fashionable enough to be worn with the finest western attire, and easily deployed or flashed should the situation warrant(usually at a poker table), with the only comment made, “That’s going to leave a bruise!”.(Credit:ladyT)
22) Cowboy Boot Gun ( l. occidentalem Dudus tabernus tormentarii) – a gun normally paired with a blade for carry into the urban jungle to ensure the wearers survivability . It has also been seen in bars, saloons, and evidence lockers after less than civil discussions or during the resolution of observations while playing cards or other games of chance. (Credit:ladyT)
23) Cocktail Gun (l.formalis tormentarii) - a gun no larger than a .32. It can be carried in a woman’s evening bag or in a thigh holster. For evening functions a high polish stainless version is the norm. Grips are expected to be Ivory or Mother of Pearl and the gun itself must be engraved. (Credit:ladyT)
24) Belly Gun (l.venter tormentarii) - is a short-barreled revolver, for concealed carry. It may have additional, distinctive features: shortened grip frame, absent front sight, de-spurred ("bobbed") hammer, absent front half of the trigger guard, and large (.44 or .45 inch) caliber.
The older I get, the harder I see, the bigger the belly, the smaller the gun! (Credit:JB2009)
The origin of the term is obscure, but the belly gun's modern formulation dates from the first half of the Twentieth Century, and can be attributed to a small group of men, most with military backgrounds: Colonel Rex Applegate, Major Eric A. Sykes, Lieutenant-Colonel William E. Fairbairn, pistolsmith John H. Fitzgerald, and perhaps most prominently Colonel Charles Askins. (Wikipedia).
25) Inherited Gun (l. hereditavit tormentarii) - a gun previously kept in the sock drawer, closet, or other nonconventional repository chosen by now deceased ancestor. Characterized by fervent desire of inheritor that it will prove to be rare and valuable, but unaccompanied by any ability to establish same. In rare instances, appreciated for what it is, a bit of family history to be passed on to one's descendants.(Credit:Goony)
26) Zip Gun (l. rapidiatis tormentarii) - a gun also referred to as an improvised firearm. A gun built by someone, usually in their garage, using readily available materials. They are mostly seen in the .22 caliber variety. They are illegal. Zip guns were made popular by gangs in the 1950’s although they are not exclusionary to gangs. Insurgents and partisans in many countries made and used this type of weapon during WWII and later. (Credit:Kelly Green)
27) Brother in Law Gun (l. frater in legem tormentarii) – a gun of any caliber that is owned by your brother-in-law. The gun has usually been acquired (not necessarily purchased) so that the BIL can ensure equal status to the person that married one of his siblings. The gun is generally in poor condition, and the only reason that you know of its existence is that it is constantly being brought to your house so you can fix it, tweak it, or correct something that shade tree gunsmith with his Dremel “improved”. (Credit:Sabago Son)
28) Bathroom Gun (l. balneo tormentarii) – a gun which resides in the bathroom for a variety of reasons. It serves two major purposes. 1) It ensures a certain degree of protection while you have your pants (or skirt) around your ankles. 2) It gives you something to play with in the event that reading material is not readily available. Any caliber will do as long as it makes you feel protected while reading your favorite literature.
It is rumoured that Long Colt Frazier keeps his pre-28 on the top shelf above the toilet paper

29) Coffee Table Gun. (l. capulus mensam tormentarii) - a gun of no particular model or caliber. Any of the guns in one's collection rotated on a daily or weekly basis. Kept within easy reach on the coffee table, like the TV remote. Used in the event of a home invasion or other such interruption of your normally scheduled programming. (Credit

30) CTG Gun (l.CTG tormentarii ) –a gun of which encompasses all frame sizes and calibers, all pre-Model Number guns and is usually acquired as an inheritance, found in an attic trunk or box, wrapped in a sock at the back of a recently deceased relative or acquaintance, or because someone found it and wanted it out of the house. (Credit: Walter Rego)
31) Signaling Device/Gun (l. significantes tormentarii) - a large caliber gun, with loud report to signal to neer-do-wells, malcontents, reprobates, miscreants, malingerers, etc. that the posessor of such "signaling device", upon report from same device is, indeed aware of their presence in the immediate area. This device has been used successfully to alter the intent of said neer-do-well given the proximity of signaler to current position of malingerer.(Credit:Bill)
31)The Pimp-Daddy gun (l.leno pater gun). - this gun definition spans two distinct timeframes in the late 20th and 21st centuries. The Vintage PDG (Pre 70s) was often characterized by a small caliber, short barrel, nickel plated J frame with mandatory Mop or Faux MOP grips. Gold plating on hammers and triggers was common. A fitz trigger guard and a sharpened front sight were frequent options. Carried completely concealed this gun could be displayed with lightning speed.
The PDG Nouveau became more widely used around the turn of the century and the decline of American manufacturing and the rise in the drug trade. Used to impress with style before function, the trend was toward large, hi-cap semi autos. Complete coverage in gold plating was common, but function testing and internal cleaning was not. Marksmanship in most cases was optional.
The only real requirement for the PDG Nouveau is that it must function when held sideways. With a nod toward tradition and a touch of vulger taste, fake pearl grips were still much in use. No longer a need to conceal it is usually worn stuck in a waistband.
Although, not directly related it is often grouped with the GANGSTA gun which is a sub-specie of the Throw Down Gunor Evidence Gun with liberal amounts of bling attached. Credit:needsmostuff).
As more types of guns are defined they will be added to the list. If you have any additions, please feel free to add them to the list! If you have any pictures, please post them. As soon as I get time I will add them to the list.
