Gun lovin\' Hollywood Ca.
My friend just received a shipping label from Smith to send a gun in. I told-him fed ex wont accept from a non ffl. We called Smith and was told its ok since they have an account with them. But I still think fed ex wont accept it and we will have to go through an fll. Anyone send a gun back directly this year?

Not only will they accept it from him, they will come to his front door. Just inform the driver of the contents, per instructions.

If you have a pre-printed label, it's (basically, for all intents and purposes…) not really even "you" that's shipping the item.

Unlike walking up to a customer counter and giving information and payment, you are basically holding a package that's already in their system, they just don't happen to have their hands on it yet.

If the FedEx truck had the back door open and was driving down your street you could throw that sucker in there without him even stopping the truck and it's totally good to go. (assuming you packed it carefully and it landed somewhere soft-ish)

You do want a receipt from FedEx that they received the package. I see you are in CA; don't know what laws CA may impose. In these parts, one simply takes a package like that to a hub, not a retail Fed Ex store. Hands it across the counter. Yes, you want a receipt.

The retail FedEx store around the corner took my 460 and off it went to Smith with Smith's shipping label.
Was returned to me and just required my signature.
But you live in the free state of Florida ... The OP seems to live in Hollywood California ...in that place they make their own rules ...
I would call local CA FedEx ... you just might have to go through FFL dealer .

I just shipped via Fedex a Stoeger coach gun that had a call tag from Stoeger. No issues at all.

Seems like if a manufacturer sends a shipping label Fedex doesn't care.

Let us know how this plays out ... I'm interested in knowing if Hollywood and/or California rules and regulations trump Fed Ex and the rest of the Nation's rules and regulations .
I've always heard that Hollywood CA. was "different " ... but
I wouldn't know ...they say the same thing about us swamp people from Louisiana .

I shipped a M317 back to S&W this past spring using their label.

I dropped it off at the local store, iirc.

Three months later, arriving home after work, I found it by the front door.

I did note that S&W's shipping labels don't say "S&W" or "Smith & Wesson" on them but use an innocuous name that doesn't scream "GUN."

I've sent handguns back for warranty repair via FEDEX and pre-paid shipping label. I have dropped them off at a FEDEX box (like a mail box) and at a store front. No muss, no fuss. Got them delivered to my front door when they came back repaired!

From the last FEDEX Service Guide I have on-hand:

C. Firearms must be shipped via FedEx Priority Overnight service. FedEx Express cannot ship or deliver firearms C.O.D. Firearms shipments cannot be placed in a FedEx Express Drop Box.

D. Upon presenting the package for shipment, the person tendering the shipment to FedEx Express is required to notify FedEx Express that the package contains a firearm. The outside of the package must not be marked, labeled or otherwise identify that the package contains a firearm.

.

Did you notify the agent inside the Drop Box that the package contained a firearm? ;)

Sorry, just because you did it doesn't mean it's correct.

.
.

I couldn't find it in the Guide but I've understood it's best to take it to the main distribution hub for shipping, which is at the International Airport in this area.

They'll typically have better trained employees/management there to resolve any issues/concerns.

One time I dropped off a packaged revolver, going back to S&W with a pre-paid shipping label on it, at the FEDEX main hub & told the lady it contained a firearm.

She promptly let go of the package & stepped back from it. I thought she was going to freak out but after a few seconds she continued on. :p

And definitely get a Drop-Off receipt from them showing it made into FEDEX's hands, just in case something happens to it before it gets to S&W.

Not being a FEDEX employee, I didn't read their regulations. I just hope the FEDEX police don't haul me away in irons!;)
