I recently watched people being interviewed at a convention and several of them made reference to "gun nuts". I've heard this term before, we all have, but I can't find anyone who defines what this means. I do know that it wasn't said in a complimentary way. Is it anyone who carrys a gun? Is there a number of guns you can own to qualify? If you reload, are you automatically a "gun nut"? Perhaps someone out there has more information than I do about this term. I think I qualify as one but I'd like to know for sure.

Steve in Vermont: i looked up the term gun nut on wikipedia and here is what they had to say. "The term gun nut has been used to describe firearms enthusiasts who are deeply involved with the gun culture."

My definetion is simple. Anyone highly interested in guns. Probley most on this site. It can be complimentry or deragatory depending on who`s saying it. Kinda like certain races of people that referr to themselves with labels in a affectionate manner but consider it deragatory when a outsider use`s the same word.

The last time I looked it up in the dictionary, I saw a picture of me. Not sure where they got it. Technology these days, facebook and all.

I always assumed a gun nut was the little metal thing that kept the gun bolt and gun washer secure, and prevented the firearm from falling apart. But I guess that's what happens when you assume ...

My personal definition of a "gun nut" is anyone who panics and goes nuts at the sight or even mere mention of the word gun.
Syn: Hoplophobe

Although I have been known to go nuts and drool at the sight of a particularly attractive gun while trying to figure out how to make it mine.

A "Nut" soulds like a crazy, immature person... I don't know... but I do love the smell of burned gunpowder... just like the smell of coffee... together it's even better :D

I have found that in most circles, if you know more about a "gun" than which end the bullet comes out of, you are a "gun nut".

As my ol Grand Daddy used to tell us,
"Boys, a million dollars don't go as far as it used too, ya know!"

He's right...It don't! ;):D

The care and artistry that goes into the making of a quality firearm, whether it's a modern Smith & Wesson, or one of those fine old double barrel shotguns or muskets, is far, far greater than any other article that exists in the modern home. We love guns because they're the most beautiful works of art that normal folks can afford. Whether it's a safe full of treasures, or Pa's old squirrel gun hanging over the fireplace. A finely-crafted gun is as fine a work of art as man can achieve. Yep, I'm a gun nut.

Back in the old days when Para owned the forum and things were a bit looser, we had a long running thread on the forum. "You might be a gun nut if" and then a fun set of definitions. Like if your police department came to you when they needed guns. The list went on and on, and many of us qualified.
