It wold be a better picture with a 58 next to it. Especially if it was $400 too!!

...that was a bargain. A grand for a "S" prefix with PC and original everything is the going price these days... I just saw a nickel 4" "S" prefix at a local shop for $1350.00....you will make your money back if you sell it...course you will probably sell off all the .357s and .44s now that you are a Cult of the .41 member....

The serial number is S320079, my guess would be mid-1969 but I could be wrong.
As for selling off my .357's – not a chance, I love my 27's, 28, and even my 19's.
I should put up a picture of the box, the previous owner covered the inside with a hideous shade of green velvet (very 70's). I'll re-flock when I get a chance.

Those are awful guns and you'll regret it. About 20 years ago I bought one at a gun show, and I've never even shot it! I'd been looking at this gun and BSing with the seller for a number of shows. I just thought he was too high, so I decided on an upper limit I wouldn't go past. At that time it was $2000. Way too much, but it sure was purty. So at this one show I'd walked my feet off and was stumbling along on the stumps. All loaded down like a rented mule. But the seller (who later became one of my best friends and gun show partner) was stuck on $2400. And we'd had some friendly banter about his price and if his mother and father were married.
But on this particular day I was tired and needed to set my hoard down and rest. And John saw me coming along, slow but steady. When I got about 3 tables away he started in on me. Yelling about me trying to steal his treasures. And as I got to his tables, he asked loud enough for everyone for a couple of aisles to hear about when I was going to get serious instead of just taking up his time. He kind of threw down the gauntlet. So it was my turn and I just replied "I'll get serious when you get the price reasonable." Then I said I'd pay $2000 for it, no more. And in one smooth motion, I pulled out the reserve pack of Ben Franklins and tossed it on his glass case. It was late, nothing much going on, and I pretty much called his bet. But its how I came to own the M57. And I've still not fired it, nor do I plan on it.
Its got its fair share of factory scratching. And doesn't even have the original grips. Someone in the distant past seems to have replaced them with about the nicest set of Ivories I've seen to date. These are great guns, and the caliber is under appreciated and it has never been provided with decent ammo. Too bad, too. S&W has provided us with another great gun, the 357 (no, not the puny .38 on steroids, the one with state of the art scandium.) Its another gun that if you see for sale, you need to buy it. Its actually better than the 329s.

I went to the show yesterday. There were some good deals for a change, it looks like the prices are starting to come back in line with the real world around here.
I never really thought much about a 57, that .41 caliber just seems to be something that falls in between the .357's and .44's that I already have and wouldn't be very useful. But when I came across this early S serial number gun that was priced about half of what I would have paid for it I figured what the hell. I even feel a little guilty about talking him down in price.
It's not perfect but its close and came with a display box and tools. Now I just need brass and some bullets.
