Back in the old days (1979), says the old man, PMC 223 5.56 was $8/100, and I could reload for $5.75/100, so I loaded 20,000 rounds in 1984 after I gathered my components. I still have about 3000, and one of my sons has another 3000. When I shoot the current 223/5.56 FMJ, I get 1"+ groups @ 100 yards. My loads from 1984 do 1/4-3/8" @ 100 from the same gun. I haven't loaded with current components for a comparison, but I suspect the primers are the issue!
In 1984 I used mixed brass, cleaned and primer crimp swaged. WW748, Winchester 55 grain FMJBT/w Can. and CCI Small Rifle Magnum primers. Loaded on a then new Dillon 450 using RCBS small base FL dies with a roll crimp.
About a year ago I noticed Hornady 55 gr FMJBT/w Can. were 17.99/100 at Cabela's, if you find primers they run about $90/1000, and powder is over $31 a pound. My load was from Lyman #45 and listed as the accuracy load!
1984 price was $54/8 pound can of WW748, Win bullets were $8/1000 for 55 gr (same for 140 30 Cal FMJBT) and primers were $5.99 for standard and $6.99 for mag. Used brass was 2 cents each by the 1000. (I got quite a bit at less than 1 cent each!) And sales tax was 3.5% less too!
At today prices 50 cent each for new is less than it costs to reload!
The 38 S&W ammo was about $6 -$7 a box in the early 80's (My grandfather paid $1.58 for Reminton in 1928- I still have one of his guns with them ammo!)
So, it looks like you did well!
