Gun store employees that are just plain full of it...

The owner of the gun store I get most of my stuff from says a lot but doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Some of his employees do know what they are talking about though and I'll take their advice.

And yep, always do you own homework.

LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT.

Perhaps 15 years ago, I took a brand new, still in the original cosmoline, WWII Remington Rand into my LGS for an appraisal.

The back story is that, my friend's father served in WWII and was issued this RR and a new US marked holster. However, the soldier had his own personal .45ACP revolver (Colt Model 1917), and carried his personal weapon throughout Europe during the war. When he mustered out, he kept these two guns, which eventually came into my hands.

The LGS employee looked at it, listened to the back story, promptly gave me an 80% finish rating on this piston, and told me the Blue Book value for an 80% Remington Rand GI .45 ACP pistol
This pistol was in 100% condition. Even a then-naive me thought the appraisal was nonsense.

I cleaned up the gun, and took it to the range, of course.

Now I'm normally a shoot them type too, But having 2 WWll vintage 45's, 1 fired & 1 unfired, you shot the unfired one??? I guess if you plan on keeping both & don't mind the loss on the re sell value, TEHO.

After buying, selling, and trading gun at shows and LGS since 1975 I can say I have heard more BS from the gallery. especially the expert telling his friend all about a certain gun. At the local LGS I frequent I am asked by the counter help for help and the owner who I have known for 30+ years gave Me a plaque which said " Salesman of the Decade" and a 4 inch nickel 29-2 last Thursday when I walked in. If he catches a counter sales person(PC) BS'n a customer He politely intervenes and takes over. Then the employee goes into His office, never in front of anyone, and is told to ask for help, don't try to BS the customer. If you don't know say so and ask. Great place to shop.

There are several LGS's in my area that I frequent from time to time. They are owner operated with no employee's. I find them all knowledgeable and helpful and they stand behind what they sell. Now I can not say the same for the two big box stores around here. Their employees are rude and don't really know anything. They could actually care less if you shop there or not.

They work for salary, no commissions!

I oft hear some crazy stuff, but fortunately I don't need to ask any technical questions. I come prepared.

Guys, I have reached a point in my life where I pretty much just deal with professional collector shops and dealers. There is virtually no BS and everyone pretty well knows and understands the value. You are not going to creep up on something but you will get fair value for your dollar and be welcomed back and enjoy the friendly banter with others of the same thoughts on both sides of the counter. All my very best, Joe.

I was paid quite the compliment by a friend that works at the LGS when I last visited... I was waiting to chat when he was finished with the young couple he was attending to... she was helping him get his first gun for concealed carry... my friend turned them to me and said..."this guy knows more than I do about pistols and revolvers..." I just smiled and said what are you looking for... my friend is quite the expert in rifles and shotguns... but I do have him beat in the little bundles of joy... misspent youth finally pays off... lol

My father owned a used auto parts yard. Frequently when he quoted a price to a potential customer, the potential customer would say "The yard down the road has it for half that."

My father would advise them to head on down and buy it because he couldn't match that price. At which point, the potential customer would say, "They don't have any in stock!"

At which point my father would say, "Next time I don't have any in stock, you can have all you want for free."

Your post reminded me of those exchanges.

As to gun stores, I go there for guns and ammunition, not stories.

My favorite gun shop line (heard constantly outside of my local favorites): "This gun is going for a lot more on Gunbroker" or "I can get a ton more money for this gun on Gunbroker"!

If they can get so damn much more money for it on Gunbroker, why the heck don't they just put the gun on Gunbroker and be done with it?

I couldn't work behind the counter putting up with all the BSers and lookie loos.
I did correct one gun store salesman that was giving my wife bad information. Neither liked it but I won't have someone plant bad information in her head.
Otherwise the BS just rolls off my back.

I bought a .22 semi-automatic rifle at the local big box store here in Paradise. After the mandatory waiting period, went to said store to pick it up. Nice young lady put in charge that day opened a box and handed me a .223 cartridge and asked me to demonstrate I knew how to load and unload the weapon. I looked into her box of dummy cartridges and found most were improperly marked or in the wrong sections...put some back where they should have been, took the .22 dummy round, loaded, and ejected the cartridge in her presence. I did not talk down to her, but her management should have not placed her in a position like that with little technical knowledge as well as a messed up dummy round cartridge case in the first place. No hard feelings either way.

Missed 3 out of 3 at least he is good with his lies.

I get tired of the reasons I need to get rid of my revolvers (carried in LEO duty) and NEED a black nylon auto from those guys. Want to tell them I was carrying a Browning HP before the high capacity came around working undercover Narc.

Got 40 cl HK but not a snub nose S &W all anyone needs

Is that a weird California law, or an idiotic gunstore requirement?

'Cause, tell you true, I ain't never heard of such a thing.
