I have seen several posts here where folks mention waxing their blued guns. What brand or type of wax is used? Is this for cosmetic purposes or does it provide enhanced protection?
Is there a potential down side to waxing?

Renissance Wax is a preservative wax used by museums all over the world, and many members here, including me.
Works great on blued, nickel, stainless and even wood.

Get it at Midway and Amazon, among others.

I was skeptical, but after using Renaissance Wax I'm a believer. It brings out the depth of the bluing, and hides minor scratches in stainless. Best of all, it resists fingerprints and doesn't migrate like oil. It does a nice job on wood and leather too.

wax

back in the 70's and 80's I used to wax my colt lightweight commander with car wax. I carried it everyday on duty for over 30 years without any rust.

WAX

I'm no expert on this topic but an old (83 years) gun smith (who can damn near do anything) has been using Johnson's paste was on all of his firearms. He still has a very early Winchester 67 rifle given to him by his father (don't know how many years ago) and it's been waxed with Johnson's wax probably more times than I can count and it looks great.

Ive never seen it at a show or a store, but you can find it on eBay and amazon. Its pricey but the smallest jar goes a long way.I use it on my rifle and shotgun stocks too.

It's cold up here in the north today so the can of Ren Wax has come out. I think every thing has been waxed at least 3 times this winter. When it's to cold to shoot wax.
Thats how I get thru the winter.

I have an almost full can of Ren wax and I like and use it, BUT I also found Kiwi Shoe polish Neutral color works just as well costs very little and is on the shelf at Harris Tetter right down the street.

I learned about Renaissance on this forum. It is amazing stuff. I thought it seemed kind of expensive for a little jar but it amazing how far a little bit goes. The little jar looks I have hardly used any at all!

renaissance wax...I have found nothing better...protects metal, leather, paper, marble, etc I always explain it as..you don't wipe your cars finish with an oily rag to protect it...instead you wax it...the NRA carries ren.wax its on amazon and all over ebay..great stuff

There are a huge number of postings about gun waxing here. Ren Wax may be good, but is probably little, if any, better than other waxes. I have used Johnson's Paste Wax on my guns for almost 40 years (the same can), and I don't know how anything could be better. Johnson's paste wax is a mixture of Carnauba wax (plant based), microcrystalline wax (petroleun based), and paraffin wax.

There have also been postings about using neutral shoe polish on guns, and I do not doubt it would also work fine. Wax is pretty much wax, and all waxes will seal and polish metal and wood surfaces. If you want to pay the price for Ren Wax, good for you. If you don't, other products will work as well and at a much lower price.

There was a posting here several weeks ago about some large gun shop using Simoniz car wax on the high-end guns it has on display. Simoniz is very high in Carnauba wax content.
