**Just got off the phone with Lew Horton Dist., confirmed it as one of the original runs (total of 6000), they got it November of 1984, letter on the way**

I had stopped going to shows because I was tired of all the same overpriced stuff, items I can easily find in my favorite shop, online or here on the forum and all the unrelated garbage we all know is mostly what's available these days.. We had a bit of a snowfall overnight, chilly day today so I thought just for giggles I'd go this morning as I want to get a Shield in 9mm, no safety.

In my heart of hearts I was hoping to find a nice 66 2.5", -2 or earlier, maybe a 3" 65 or 64. There were two 66s that I saw. One was a 4" -1, bead blast finish, ugly as sin Pach signature grips and a few dings here & there. $695-uh, nope. Then I spotted a 2.5" -2, also with Pachs, nothing else, pretty decent shape-$950!!!! Oh definitely not.

Well instead, LOL, I found a 686 2.5" no dash in the original box. The box is a bit worn, but also inside was the unopened rod/brush-not a biggie but nice just the same. The serial number puts it in Nov. '84 and the product code is 104212-Lew Horton. The gun is in very nice shape, great lock up/timing, doesn't appear to have been shot much. The grips need some help and that'll be addressed very soon. It also came with a set of of Pach Compacs, so I'll have grips to put on while the combats get "rejuvenated". Another example of a blind squirrel finding a nut.

I can always get a Shield, a 686 like this-not so much.

Here are some quick pics:

And with my no dash 4" from 1981 I inherited from my late dad:

The 4" rode on my dad's hip for almost 10 years (he passed in '92). It was the first handgun each of my sons shot and learned how to shoot handguns with.

A good friend here teased me when I called to tell him that I probably wouldn't hold on to it very long-I intend to prove him wrong LOL!

What you say about gun shows (and gun and knife shows) is all true. The thing is, as you just found out, you never know exactly what you'll stumble across.

The only gun show I've ever gone to with the intent of buying a particular gun was a few months ago when I'd asked a guy to find me a certain model. The other times I go, I simply take a good amount of cash, wander the aisles and buildings, just seeing what I can see. It's a good way to spend a couple of hours without having to run all over town or the county visiting gun stores, even if you don't find anything. Plus, it's fun to watch the people.

very nice find.I had a late production one that didn't shoot to good. I traded it. I would love to find a early one like yours.

Not to be nosey and you did share the prices of the other two, so what did this one set you back,if you don't mind sharing.
