Claude Akins and Harry-Dean Stanton made for a great duo of bad guys. Just saw them in a season 4 epoisode last night. More who made great baddies:
K.L.Smith--you will easily recognize him: Not a great image but it'll have to do:

But my favorite western tv series baddie goes to: Mort Mills:

Deforest Kelly played "Bones" on the original Star Trek series too.

And way before that, he was in either episodes 1-3 or either 4? of The Lone Ranger. He goes way back in westerns and when I think of him? I'm more inclined to think of him there, instead of Star Trek.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but one of the grave markers when Matt is walking around Boot Hill has the date (IIRC) 1882 on it. I seem to remember reading somewhere Boot Hill closed in 1879 when the city cemetery opened.

I didn't read all the posts to see if it was already mentioned, but in real life Arness had part of his foot shot off in WWII. He actually had a limp and couldn't walk a lot without pain. He spent 18 months in military hospitals before being discharged.

Different boot hill-from Tombstone's Boot Hill. I think most "wild" west towns had their own "Boot Hills.?"

I was assured.....

When I was growing up, all we had was a black and white TV. In fact I thought WWII was fought in black and white. :p

Was Gunsmoke ever shot in color?

I was assured by a guy that was in the South Pacific that the war was definitely in color. Not only that, he said that if you were going to have a war, that was one beautiful place to fight it.

Matt was too late.....

I remember one episode where the guy was hired to make nitroglycerin. Matt was whipping his horse trying to get there but he was too late and saw the smoke cloud over thie hill. They used that scene of him whipping his horse in the opening credits.

For as many times as Matt pistol-whipped people, id imagine his gun needed repairs from time-to-time.

...how in the heck did Matt Dillon quick draw with that 7 1/2 inch barrel?...

Probably practice, longer arms? greased holster? Just saw an episode where he seemed lightning quick--which I saw last night. Also, dunno if his name is familiar to most or not? but- Simon Oakland was a minor bad guy in a great episode also from last night. I thimnk he had the potentiqal to be one of the best baddies on the series.

In the opening showdown sequence, you hear a shot before Matt gets one off. I think the idea was that the 7-1/2 Colt wasn't as fast but was a lot more accurate.

Paladin also favored the longer barrel. Those guys must have known something or they wouldn't have been on TV, right? :D
