thanks, muley.

hey guys, i didn't know where to post this.
i just found this new to me old b&w cowboy series.
i found it on youtube. i got a roku tv so it's full screen for me
the name is WHISPERING SMITH starring audie murphy.
pretty cool.

In the opening showdown sequence, you hear a shot before Matt gets one off. I think the idea was that the 7-1/2 Colt wasn't as fast but was a lot more accurate.

Paladin also favored the longer barrel. Those guys must have known something or they wouldn't have been on TV, right? :D

I noticed that. They toyed around with the opening shot. 1) Dillon was first. 2) Bad guy was first Dillon more accurate. 3) Both shot at the same time.

thanks, muley.

I HAD that series but didnt care much for it. They didnt give much to Audie to work with. The Police Chief, was changed from: the Sheriff (in the movie w/ Alan Ladd as Smith) and Sam Buffington-was the Chief. I forget the name of Audie's partner in the show-but he wasnt a very good actor. I think the roles of the Chief and Audies partner--should have gone to much better character actors like: Glenn Strange as the Chief, and Jeff York as his partner.

IMO, the best episode of the series is the one with Harry Carey Jr. in it as a Cavalry Soldier. I cant remember if it was as an officer or not?

Another thing ive noticed, is their liberal use--and many diff renditions of: Red River Valley and Camptown Races, songs in Miss Kitty's Saloon. One might think those were the only two songs played.

For those currently watching or planning on watching Gunsmoke--many episodes of the 4 season set I got were excellent-especially any episode written by David SAM Peckinpah.

That said---anyone here know of the first appearance of Ken Curtis in this series? I do--and no cheating. He appeared as a Texan on a long cattle drive from Texas to Dodge City. It was an episode called: Jayhawkers. The future Festus Haggen-wasnt using his already used (in other Westerns) Festus voice--but more of his real voice. This excellent episode also had Jack Elam as his trail boss-and Lane Bradford as one of the Jayhawkers.

Not as he looked in the episode but, good enough:

Cant find images of any for that episode but, here is one of Lane Bradford in case anyone cares?

Bradford is on the right.

In a way related to Rbt. Conrad and The Wild Wild West/Gunsmoke. His partner in TWWW, was in a season 4 episode of Gunsmoke--which I just watched last night.
Not the Gunsmoke image, but close enough-minus he'd be in a B&W episode:

Just found this one to be exact: He played a gambler:

Ross Martin...:D

That's the one!!! More likes if poss? I tried every combination I could think of but no images found of the Jayhawkers episode. Or I didnt look long enough?

Anyway, just like in Rawhide--looks like those Texas boys werent popular in Kansas and Missouri. Troublemakers all-:D

They always got into trouble in Sedalia, Missouri, and Dodge City--and more often than nott? ended up dead too.

I wonder when the Festus character came into the picture? Two season 4 episodes with Ken Curtis playing a Texan trail hand, and a brother of a guy who wishes to marry a saloon girl--in: Change of Heart.
Not from the episode but, it'll work:

Season 7 episode 13, 1962 "Us Hagens" he was trailing his Uncle for killing his twin brother. He was not as lighthearted character as later. I believe he became a regular in "Prarie Wolfer" in season 8 episode 16. Played in over 300 episodes. Being John Ford's sil couldn't hurt when breaking into movies. Before Sons of the Pioneers, he was a big band singer, I believe with Tommy Dorsey.

That's interesting. I just saw "Prairie Wolfer" today. I think it is the only (or should I say "onliest"?) show to include Chester, Quint, and Festus.

Considering his later scraggly appearance, it's interesting that when Festus gets to town, he immediately gets a bath and a shave. For the rest of the episode, he is clean shaven.

Ken Curtis(aka Festus) has a very good role in "The Searchers", a very famous western directed by John Ford starring John Wayne.

Good stuff and thanks much. He also took over Frank Sinatra's orchestra too.

Id always thought-sight unseen--that Chester (Weaver) quit during the 6th season? which leads me to wonder how long Quint (Reynolds) lasted on the show? Ive never seen any Quint eps either.

Another, I wonder what season it was where Dillon quit visiting Boot Hill and musing how the interned-got there.

I believe that role was the first one he tested his future "Festus" voice out in? Ive seen other things including movie serials that he starred in-and he spoke in his real accented voice-much like when he was Captain Dickinson in: The Alamo. He also sang at least two songs in that--one was for Aiessa's birthday (on screen)

Like I mentioned, it doesn't hurt to be Fords son-in-law.no disrespect intended to Curtis, always enjoyed him in all his many and different roles.

Harry (Dobie-or-Brick) Carry Jr. was Paul Fix's SiL--and likely because of Fix's connection with Duke--got him more roles than he'd likely been offered-with zero offense to Dobie's acting ability.
