I grew up watching Gunsmoke and I still enjoy watching it, but I prefer the B&W episodes, especially the thirty minute ones. Matt had integrity, he never stole anything and he stood for justice. He wasn’t always “by the book” but any real lawman knows the answers aren’t always in some book. He stood up for what was right and sometimes that calls for violence. He was quicker to use his fists than he was to use his Colt, what we now call the Use-of-Force Continuum. (I knew it was time to retire when my wife noticed one of my knuckles was swollen from a fight I’d been in. I thought, “I wonder how many sixty-two year old men are having a conversation like this with their wives?”).
I never thought Matt was heavy-handed, there are people in this world that will come looking for trouble and Matt was the guy they shouldn’t have messed with.
BTW, “The Roundup” episode reminds me of when Wild Bill Hickok accidentally shot Mike Williams.
