Guys I need a bit of advice on what to do here

1. Its a 38/44.
2. Your Dad gave it to you.
3. 1911s are common as dirt.

DON"T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

What he said... one of these days your father will no longer be with you, and you will regret turning loose one of those links to your father.

Hang onto it, and save for the 1911. You can make more money; you cannot get your father back once he is gone.

Don't even think about it!
You can buy a 1911 from numerous different manufacturers. They probably range anywhere from maybe $500 to several thousand. It shouldn't be a problem finding a carry gun for a reasonable price.
The carry 1911 you buy will be a nice gun, but they'll still be making them in 50 years. They ain't gonna make any more Heavy Duties. The Transitional ones are especially valuable, with the 4" barrel even more so.
You seem to think a Heavy Duty is not a good carry gun. I disagree. A have a 5" one from about 1952. I carry it sometimes in a LOBO IWB holster with no problems. Even used it to re-qualify for my carry permit.

The 1911 is a nice gun.
The Heavy Duty is just COOL.

The fact your Dad gave it to you makes it all the more special.

So there. Motion was moved, seconded and passed.:D

Transitional HD might just bring a premium to some buyers, but I join the others and say hang on to it.

There are lots of 1911's out there and I think they may build a few more, but there won't be anymore of Dad's HDs.

I have to echo what others have said.I've sold a couple of guns that I bought and had some remorse but not much.My dad had one gun which I now own. He's been gone for thirty years and I treat everything that was given to me by him as sacred. When it's time those items will go to my daughters.I know its yours to do with as you wish but I say do not sell that gun.

Obvious.

There is NOT A SINGLE response from the roughly 20 previous responses encouraging you to trade or sell the .38/.44 Heavy Duty. I will add another response encouraging to not trade or sell something your father gave you.

Ok, I will be a heretic. Sell it to me as I collect them... :D:D:D:D

NOOO, Seriously don't do it. As others have pointed out, it was from your father. Keep it and save for a 1911. Years later you won't get it back and will likely want it.

Besides, 38/44's are nothing to trifle with. Properly loaded they can do a lot and are quite good guns which is why I collect them.

I bet ol' Hilton doesn't recommend a revolver, either.
I notice he sells a bunch of parts and accessories for those obsolete 1911's too.
The "more tactical than thou" crowd gets tiresome after a while.

We're in agreement on this. Hilton Yam's take on 1911s and their (his words) "design failures" sounds like just so much horse pucky to me. His comments are just too ambiguous. Besides, I find it a bit hard to take anything seriously that's said by someone whose surname is a synonym for "potato".

+1 I would never sell any gun my Dad gave me. I like 1911's too but you can get one in any price at any time.

Doyle

You can always get more money but that gun is one of a kind!

Thanks for all the support guys. I am really attached to this HD, but I was just wondering what you guys might do. I am disabled and am broke I cant work and money is tight beyond all imagination. Thats the only reason I asked not because the HD doesnt mean anything to me. It does more than any other pistol I have ever owned. I was just wanting something different I guess. I will save my money for a little bit and get a Simply Rugged holster and a set of VZ 320 grips so I can carry the thing. I really appreciate your thoughts guys I felt the same way about it that I knew it was a mistake I just wanted to see what you felt also. I cant thank you enough for your input!!

You made the correct decision. Your father won't live forever and when he passes that revolver will have a legacy you just can't concieve of while he is alive.

BTW, unless you are a quadriplegic using a straw to control a wheelchair you aren't actually "disabled" in this country today. Perhaps a bit challenged physically but certainly not disabled. I would suggest that you re-think your personal attitude towards your physical challenges and be a bit more positive about what you can still do. Then use that to determine what jobs you can do that you'll find both interesting and rewarding.

Guess i'm not one of the sentimental types on here in regards to
firearms. My suggestion is get what you want and if it means trading
away an older firearm that was once dads so be it.
I don't need a material possession of my father to remind me of him.
If you truly want to build you a nice 1911 and need to sell or trade
the 38/44 to do it then i think your dad would be perfectly OK with it.
Why keep a gun you will rarely if ever shoot tucked in the back of
the safe ? Lifes too short. Enjoy your shooting and good luck with
whatever you decide. It's all up to you my friend.

My father left me the model 48 that he taught me to shoot a handgun with, and I sold it in '79...I spent close to fifteen years looking at and buying/ selling 48s and finally found it, on this forum. Got no idea how much money I spent on finding that 48, but it'd be a rare RARE 1911 that would cost that much. My 48 ain't for sale either.

Hope you get my drift....and by the way, I love 38-44 Heavy Dutys, but don't sell yours.
Jim
