Had A pretty scary thing happen yesterday.

A Little Long
Went down to the irrigation office yesterday.. Put the truck in park and went to the door. When I came back...opened the door grabbed the handhold on the door post got one foot on the trucks running board and before I could step up the truck which was running dropped out of park into reverse. Knocked me over...drug me down the road about 50-75 ft before I could get the door open enough to let go and roll away from the truck without getting legs or arms run over...still ran over my right hand...Don't know why it dropped into reverse. Truck ended up backing into a large electric pole. 100 feet or so away. ..the hitch hit dead center. The only damage other than to me was the pole got a gouge in it. BTW the truck is a 2007 Ford F-250 in exc condition. Many moons ago I had a close friend get out of her car at her roadside mailbox. The car went into reverse ran over and killed her...never thought something like that could happen to me...I must admit I am a sore puppy today. Just a word to the wise...try not to do stupid stuff...my wife's words to me!!
If you feel compelled to leave it running, at least put the parking brake on, scary stuff.

Back in the late 70s, a buddy of mine drove a Ford sedan. He had it pulled up on some car ramps to get under it, left it running, (maybe to find an oil leak, can't remember exactly now) but it switched into reverse and came down the ramps. Fortunately, he was still young and quick enough to roll out from under it before getting run over. It was a pretty common problem for Ford back then. There was a lot of pressure for them to have a recall. They got away with sending everyone a sticker to put on the dash to remind them to apply the parking brake. Cheap fix for them.

Let's say you park on a hill with snow & ice by the curb and bare pavement a couple feet away. Due to the way differentials work, if you only put it in park the vehicle could roll away 'till both tires got traction.

As a wet behind the ears, know nothing baby Trooper I was taught to stomp on the emergency brake as you throw it in park and reach for the door handle …
We had a young trainee on his first Traffic Stop left the cruiser in “D” got out and the cruiser crashes into the violator’s car.

We let him go and he went to the School Police for the next 28 years. A safe Foot Beat is where he belonged.
