Had an enlightening "chat" with an anti today

If we are gonna be busting on Atheists I can just as easily start in on your beliefs. ...just saying

I don't particularly care if she's an atheist or what religion she (or anyone else) is or isn't. Where I question her "beliefs" (or lack there of) is when she spouts off on how much she enjoys decorating a Christmas tree and then professes she's an atheist in the next sentence.

That makes her a total hypocrite! That, and solely that, was the reason for my angst.

Well....A Xmas tree has nothing to do with Xmas. It's a pagan celebration. There are no Xmas trees in the middle east. And decorating has nothing to do with believing

Perhaps you should start a pole here and see if people feel a Christmas tree has nothing to do with Christmas. Just sayin'

She's a self-professed atheist (not that there's anything wrong with that) and at least to some extent openly and joyfully celebrates a traditionally Christmas tradition complete with angel and Santa ornaments .....Sorry Arik but still a hypocrite.

Thanks for reminding us that the use of Xmas is indeed not a secular, non religious way to recognize the Christmas holiday! In fact, the use of X, the Greek letter Chi, often in conjunction with the Greek rho, expressed as p, representing the first two letters of the Greek Christos, is an ancient and honorable way to express His name.

Merry Christmas to all, or, in the Greek,
Καλά Χριστούγεννα

Think of how many people could be injured while visiting her house and stepping/slipping on huge piles of poop? :D

keeping your cool is the best approach...we live in a great country that un-fortunately is being changed by afew people that get into our judicial system and change things that effect us all...they have the right to their opinion and I have the right to state mine also as you did...she sounds young and easily swayed by all the BS on the net and tv....thanks for sticking up for my point of view

Lady Koz and I went to a small Christmas party today. The host is a younger, single female with 6 Great Danes. Her sister was visiting from Minneapolis. We were all sitting around chatting mostly about pets and neighbors. I don't know how the sister got there, but all of a sudden she said "most people end up shooting themselves when they try to defend themselves with guns".

I kept my cool and told her I was a big proponent of the 2nd Amendment and closely follow gun altercations around the country and don't recall coming across that stat. I politely asked her where she got that bit of information because I read many stories of people successfully using guns to defend themselves, loved ones and property and don't recall the last time I heard of anyone shooting themselves during a self defense situation. She had nothin'.

I asked her if improper and unsafe use of guns by some should limit the rights of those who safely handle guns daily, shoot 1000's of rounds a year and train for those situations. She said of course, it's the only way to protect people". But who besides cops handle guns every day and shoot that much? I told her I handle guns several times a day, most every day and shoot many thousands of rounds every year.

I knew she wanted to ask if I had a gun on me (M60 IWB, speed loader in my pocket) but she thought better of it. Well that and her foot was still in her mouth. I offered no further information. I looked at my wife as she smiled and tapped her purse telling me that her Shield was in there as well.

I said: "You know thousands of people get behind the wheel of their car and slide on the ice into other cars and into ditches. I can provide you with stats on them hurting or even killing themselves and others. Do we need to restrict them from driving"? Again nothing.

Someone quickly changed the subject and started talking about how nice their Christmas tree was decorated. The anti said she looks forward to decorating her tree every year and how this year she got to decorate two trees (including her sister's). In the very next sentence she (with no apparent coherent lead in) stated that she was an atheist. I literally thought my head was going to explode!

My wife suggested we needed to go home to walk and feed the dog. We said our good-byes and proceeded home in total amazement.

They walk among us AND THEY VOTE!

That lady reminds me of someone in that movie: They Live.

I don't argue with the Anti's anymore. I did for many years.

Now I just tell them what's going to happen if they try to ban guns.

I've seen looks of horror on the faces of the Daisies when they are confronted with what will happen in this country.

I even have a look of horror when I think about it happening and what it will lead to.

Rule 303

My oldest friend in the world -- we met in First Grade in 1959 -- is a staunch liberal who absolutely detests the NRA and hates guns. I've taken him to my club to target shoot, and even though he enjoys it, he still maintains that the only purpose of a gun is to kill people.

I often use analogies to illustrate points. Like me, my friend was also a firefighter (I got him to take the entrance exam with me) and is now retired. I've tried explaining to him that just as I keep a fire extinguisher handy in my home in case of fire, I keep my Model 65 next to my bed in case of a criminal emergency. He doesn't get it. I've asked him if he has any means to defend himself in his home; he replied that he keeps a baseball bat in his bedroom closet.

You cannot reason with these folks, for they don't think logically or rationally about this subject. They don't like guns, wouldn't own a gun, and thus see no reason for anyone else to own one either.

Kozmic, you handled the situation well...much better than I would have! :)

One would assume Arik will be hard at work Wednesday.

Merry Christmas to all!

Actually yes. It's mid week and I have employees from OH to Seattle. So yea I will be working and I worked thanksgiving too. My only real holidays are when everyone is here and it happens to fall on a holiday. ...and new years, that one I request off

What do you expect, when any news station, or rag only report the negatives on guns. Most stories are about mass shootings, or gang bangers, very few reports about successful self defense gun carriers ever get a mention.
The media have a lot to do with people believing guns are bad. I don't even bother trying to explain. My wife knows I carry, and that's where it ends.

Last January I met an old friend for coffee. This was right after the NRA suggested police should be placed in each school to prevent another Sandy Hook. I knew my friend was very liberal and has been since I met her 30 years ago. The talk turned to police in schools. She was astounded that anyone would suggest that police be placed in schools. I tried to gently point out that as a school board member of a very small rural school district I knew it was common for police to attend all sporting events and our district allowed the sheriff to conduct drug dog searches. Moreover, most urban schools have a regular, daily police officer. It is only mostly the suburban schools that do not have a police presence. We didn't discuss my gun ownership at all, but that conversation put a strain on the relationship unfortunately.

Because of that conversation I came to realize that people tend to be motivated by fear. And if they are offered a solution that is presented as an easy way to avoid the threat, they will tend to adopt that solution. They tend not to look at alternate solutions that may take more effort and involvement, but which may be more effective overall.

Although it takes more effort on our part as gun owners, IMO we should try to educate the antis.
