Hammer Drag - Normal?

The action on my newly acquired Model 681 is heavier than my other Smiths. Opened it up for a peek, and I see this:

Appears as if one of the pins in the hammer is dragging to the point that it has actually peened out a small crater and groove in the plate.

I had always thought that the hammer was located by the little circular bosses around the hammer pin.

Question:

1) Is this normal?
2) If not, is it OK to carefully stone this area and the offending pin?

If the pin isn't set flush, then it needs to be. If you have excessive "hammer slop" side to side, then its time for some Powers hammer washers (Brownells).

If the hammer (and trigger for that matter) travel in a straight arc (no excess side-to-side) there will be no scratches on their sides. Additionally your trigger pull will be more consistent and probably lighter.

Yes, stone all high spots and add a drop or two of oil. It will be better.

Tap the pin in so it doesn't protrude (frequently all that's required) or stone it down flush.

Tapping did the trick. Polished the inside of the plate on my granite block for good measure.
