I purchased a model 65-3 and when I got it home I disassembled it for a thorough cleaning.
After removing the side plate I check to see if there any wear marks where pins in the hammer or trigger are extended out causing drag marks.
The pin at the top of the hammer was not only extended out and causing a drag mark but at one time was so far out it caused a divot in the side plate. I tapped the pin back in place.

the sideplate "speaks"

Lots of good information provided by the sideplate. Here are some of the incidental contact sites on the interior of the plate that can cause issues.....info courtesy of John Contro at the S&W armorers school.

Many of these can still be evident in revolvers created after the conversion to MIM internals.

Pretty sure nobody here knew John. Wow, did I learn a lot from him. And he patiently answered every one of my stupid and incessant questions.....for two weeks. Thanks John.
I knew him. John Contro was head instructor at my armorer class. He could be a bit gruff but was a very effective instructor with a wealth of knowledge.
I still laugh to myself about the time a student asked what you would call a
revolver that was stuck shut and the cylinder won't open and John replied, "well, we shall call it a "stuck shut."

Toyman, I am confused, you said the pin at the top of the trigger but your pic actually shows it being the sear pin on the hammer. Please clarify? Thanks

I called S&W about 10 years ago to order some items, I asked the person who answered the phone if she knew Don Vivenzio, she transferred my call to him. He was working customer service was no longer teaching.
Don did most of the instruction when I went through in 1979.
