Hammer push off

It's checked with the hammer cocked and the gun unloaded. Apply mild pressure to the back of the hammer with your thumb without touching the trigger. If it falls, you have push off.

A friendly advice is to NOT push with your thumb! It can severely damage the internal triggerwork.

Use a 2lb weight on a string that you hang on the hammer with the barrel pointed down towards the floor, that is all that is needed.

Smith replaced both parts on my 29-3 about 12 years ago under their Lifetime Service Guarantee even though I bought it before 1989.

Would you suggest fixing it by honing or replacing the trigger?

How to correct it is a matter for a pistolsmith.
Things get complicated if someone has been inside altering the hammer or trigger trying for a better trigger pull.

If is a simply matter of push off and no parts have been botched up, the "fix" is fairly simple.

At the top of this forum is an FAQ sticky.
On page three is a post on how to correct SIMPLE push off. Again, this is only good as long as nothing else is out of order.
A first step is checking to see if someone has installed a lighter weight spring set. In a gun that's "close" to push off, a lighter spring set can put it over the edge into push off.

I read the FAQs, it says to hone, but the manual says to replace the trigger, hence the question. I don't plan on doing anything....I'll send it in for service.
