My wife has a M&P and because of NYS idiotic laws has a magazine restriction of 10 rounds. The gun was a double stack design and she has trouble loading rounds as the mags have really strong springs.

One of the shooters last night told her that S&W only makes full length springs designed for the high cap mags and also installs them in the limited 10 rounders. He also told her to cut off exactly 2 turns from the springs and it would be easier to load and still function at a 100%!

What say you!

Hi,

Don't cut your springs. The'll loosen up over time and operation.
Get an Uplula mag loader. It will load your mags to full capacity
if desired, with no problems. Its well worth the price and a welcome option.

Thanks she (70YO) does have a couple Upalopas (as she calls them):D. She left them home last night and could only load 2 rounds in the mag. Then that RO came over and said what I posted in my OP. (he could only get 5 in himself.)

Lakesider,

Surprised that they could load that many rounds in a new pistol.
Make sure your wife takes the mag loader with her at the next
shoot. Saves a lot of frustration, and makes the process sooooo
much easier.

I bought a couple of mag loaders from Amazon made by Makershot. I like them better than my Uplula and they seem well built. You order by gun mfg and model/caliber. They are almost the same as the ones that came with my H&K's (which I really like). Very simple and effective. $12.95 each.

No . . . .

We have 10 round restrictions in CA too. :(

I've taken my 10 round mags apart for cleaning and noted the very long springs too so it appears to be true that the restricted mags use the same springs. I've never seen a different part number for replacement springs.

But as Noro said, they will get easier with use.

Mag loaders make for unusual looking jewelry if you wear one on a chain around your neck. People often ask me about mine. :) Don't cut the springs.

My new SIG 365 had mags that were impossible to load with over three rounds. I got out my mag loader and worked and worked one evening while watching TV. Almost impossible, but finally got them loosened up and loaded to their 10 and 12 round capacity. I think it has a lot to do with double-stack configuration.

Buy the Maglula! It loads my 9mm shield fast and easy. I just got mine yesterday and works 10x better than Makershot.

Loading the mags will be no problem.

Try loading the mags fully and leave them loaded for a few weeks to see it that helps. It usually does.

No it doesn't. You can leave mags loaded for years and it won't weaken the springs.
What will make mags easier to load are full cycles of compression and de-compression.
Load, unload, load, unload.

After some use, you won't even need those mag loaders.

I think it is would be odd for S&W to use the same springs, but maybe the right answer is to call there and ask someone in right division.
I tend to use mag loaders more and more, and load the mags while doing something else.

It's a shame - I likely will never even go back to NY to visit, let alone retire. I do miss it sometimes.

If the mags are restricted by stopping the follower and the spring still runs the full length of the mag, using the same spring makes sense.
