James Ellroy is a true American original. Some of his earlier books were hard for me to get through. But his "Underworld USA Trilogy", American Tabloid, The Cold Six Thousand, and Blood's A Rover flow like water for me. Especially American Tabloid, parts of which seem perfectly logical to me.

The trilogy got a bit weird for me toward the end. I actually like the L.A. Quartet better. And the best is actually his autobiographical "My Dark Places", non-fiction that reads like his fiction.

Season 4 is based on Angel Flight.

Since you have read the books first, you just have to remember that the series is based on the books. That said, the series is pretty good on its own. Like the books, you will say to yourself "just another 5 minutes" and the next thing you know it's 1 am. I started with the Amazon series and I am now reading the books, and just like the series, it is "just one more chapter". I read "The Drop" in a day.
 
Never heard of it. Which may explain why when I first saw the thread title I thought it had something to do with hirsute German spark plugs.
 
I had read all the Bosch and/or Connelly books before Amazon did the series. Titus Welliver is perfect as Bosch vs. some ego maniac super star. Bosch role calls for understated style. I loved the series and after a few weeks watched it all again.

The Wire was mentioned in earlier threads. Watch it if you can. It's based in Baltimore and touches on many aspects of the City's problems truthfully. I once lived and worked in Maryland and Baltimore. Corrupt politicians and Baltimore and Maryland are the norm.

BTW Nancy Pelosi is a member of an old political family in Baltimore, i.e. the Dalesandro clan all corrupt. She moved to Kali to score some of that dot com Money.
 
Although I do watch the series, I am currently just passing page 300 of the latest Bosch novel.

What bothers me though is that like movies that start off with, "based on a true story" or "close to the true story" etc. etc. I get frustrated when they are changed just to dramatize the real story.

Now for those that read all the books, Harry is not divorced, his wife died.

Just like I think I sent in a prior post, I have read all 22 of the Jack Reacher books and the three short stories, all about a guy who is 6'5" and weighs 250 pounds, but in the movies is played by Tom Cruise ????

I never understood that either. Hopefully someone will do more and use the right type. Same thing happened when they cast Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. Now I am a big Harrison Ford fan but he is not Jack Ryan.
 
I guess I haven't gotten up to the point on the TV series where his wife is killed but in the book Maddie was a little girl when it happened.

Full agreement on the Jack Reacher casting. I guess if Tom bought the rights he can play the role but it just doesn't work IMHO. Too bad Clint Eastwood isn't 50 years younger as he'd be close to perfect - just would need to add a few pounds.
 
Back in my error prone younger days I had a Alfa Romeo with Marelli Electrical.
That Translates to bad news, really bad news in English!
So folks would say to me, some Alfa's have Bosch.
You should have bought one of those!

I thought Harry would've looked different, but I got used to it.
The guy that looked more like any spook I ever knew was the John Tavner (Michael Dorman) character in Patriot. His father (Michael Chernus)looked a lot like an agency director, too.
 
Great series, Bosch. Great role for the lead actor, whoever he is.

I see him now and then as a character in older stuff and think, "Hey, I know that guy!" E.g., as a bit part doc in NYPD Blue. And I think I saw him in a good movie, made maybe ten or more years ago?, recently, "Gone, Baby, Gone," tho I forget what the role was.... if I did see him in it. That's a good movie, BTW, "Gone, Baby, Gone." Now on Amazon or Netflix. Forget which.

IMO, Duane Johnson is right for the role.

Casting the shortest actor in Hollywood to play a beast giant character was not wise.
 
With fictional characters, first impressions count, especially if you like them and become somehow invested in them. I'd never read one of the Bosch novels before I watched the show, so Titus Welliver IS Bosch in my brain, and that's who shows up in the mental picture when I read the books (I'm still going through the series chronologically).

It's more difficult the other way around. "Longmire" was an interesting case in point. When the show started, I'd read all the books out by then. In appearance and mannerisms, the actor Robert Taylor was a perfect fit as you would imagine the book character, although personality-wise the book Longmire and the TV Longmire were quite different, and the latter took some getting used to. My favorite characters there turned out to be ones that never were in the books.

Titus had a nice role in "The Matrix".

I hear ya. The hard one for me in the TV show was the guy playing his Indian (NA) pal. In the books it's a physically large guy. In the show, the guy is small. Not a bad actor, but small. Just seems .... off. (And I think I read the actor is Filipino, not that that bothers me any.)

Lou Diamond Phillips; he loved that role.
 
I tried the first season a while back and really didn't get into it. But so many folks here like it I thought I'd give the latest season a try.

Titus Welliver will always be Adams from Deadwood to me, but I really liked the latest season - so much I went back and watched all the previous seasons.

Lots of folks from The Wire (and a few Deadwood alums - especially the guy who wanted a Deadwood fire engine).

I would like to hit his daughter in the face with a sock full of hot nickels, but that's just me.

I'm a fan now. Can't wait to see the next season.

Same here, read the books & Lincoln Lawyer also. Didn't even KNOW there was a series.

Did get Azon prime recently just for a camera purchase, but really haven't studied all the bennies that come with it.
