Has anyone else done an ammo inventory?

3 or 4 summers ago a friend came over after lunch and we were in the garage casting. He looks around and sees about 30 ammo cans and starts laughing at all the ammo I have.

I said he had a narrow view of his ammo needs, because he only had 100 rounds of all the calibers he used.

I know a man that could not afford to invest meaningfully in silver or gold; so over a few years he bought almost 2 Million 22's. And of another man that does flea markets and has multiple underground bunkers of 223, 308, 9mm, & 45 that is for sale (I have no idea how much he hordes).

So my friend reassessed his needs and went to 200 rounds per caliber! He ran out or quit shooting over a year ago!

Some people learn some people don't!

Last month or 2 started doing an inventory of rounds, which led to inventory of reloading supplies. This led to remembering was low on 308 target bullets and 9mm bullets. Fortunately found plenty of the 308 (sierra 168 hpbt) and 9mm jrn and xtp's as they dried up 1 week later.

Course now can not remember wher i put the inventory list.

Not so long ago I'd hit the range 2 or 3 times a week. I had 9different calibers in long guns and pistols and revolvers that I shot regularly so I don't have a number for how many rounds I may have had at any one time'

It would be in the thousands though

I sold all of most calibers and stopped going to the range. But I recently Got an new shot gun, a 10mm semi auto and a 12 gauge shotgun and finally managed to scrounge up a littke ammo for each.

I was inspired to count all my ammo just to see what I had.

.22lr - 350rnds
.22mag - 84rnds
.32auto -35rnds
.38spl - 100rnds
.357mag - 450rnds
10mm fmj 100rnds, hollow points - 50rnds
.12gauge 2 3/4" #6 shot - 75 rnds
.455 (for the Webley) 72rnds

This puts me at the ammo collecting kiddie table with Rusty....

If I have 6 hundred loaded round for each pistol caliber I am happy. I have ammo cans full for my rifles, I am having to send time looking for defensive ammo in 45acp and 9mm.

except for odd ball stuff I f I buy ammo I get it in 500 round boxes. Open the last box and it is time to make or buy more. Even really odd stuff I try to keep over 100 rounds loaded for. But, I really have no idea how much I have except LOTS

I did a detailed count once..............took too long. All the years I spent working in gun shops and doing gun shows I got in the habit of buying ammo whenever the price was good. Managed to build up a pretty good stockpile despite shooting fairly regularly (and my kids shooting it too!). Currently have ammo in three locations in the basement, stored in GI cans or still in the military surplus crates. I'm good for a while, at least till the grandkids get big enough to start making a dent in it..........

My financial advisor once suggested about 10%-15% of my investments should be in commodities; he was thinking of gold and silver, but I bought copper and lead bullion. Reloads are useful but aren't very liquid, but all the rest is. Pretty good return so far.

On January 3, 2008, I was fired without any warning! I ask a friend if he would buy several thousand primers at his cost? he said yes, so I sold him a little over $800 worth. That paid my fuel bill for the whole winter and a little for next year. On May 10, 2012, (the day before my anniversary) same thing happened, I sold my lead "Strategic Reserve" of 350 pounds of 25 pound ingots. (BTW, I worked for a different jerk two weeks and saw the same in the future, and decided to act retired! And quit)

I found that when the money flow returned, it was easier to replace the primers than the lead.

I also found out, buying a years worth of reloading supplies at a time (and 2 years in advance) saves a great deal of money and time! Order and Pay in Spring/ Pick-up in fall/ start using 16 months later! For me that is $1900 to $2200. (The bank isn't paying any interest any way!)

I have not needed to sell anything since 2012. But my shelves are full of "Commodities!"

Yep. I keep inventory on an Excel spread sheet. Probably not accurate to the exact round count, but close enough.

I do the same. Once the sheet is set up it's easy. I have the weight of the empty can and the weight of a single round already in the calculations so all I have to do is weigh the ammo can. When I enter that weight to the sheet it tells me how many rounds are in that can.

Of course I have to do that for each caliber but I only shoot four calibers so it was no big deal getting set up.

If there's more than one can of a caliber I have it calculate a cumulative total so I know at a glance how many of each caliber I have on hand.

This ammo shortage is about a year old with no end in sight so I'm a little concerned.

I'm concerned as well. I'm good for a couple years but who can say when the shortages will ease? I feel certain prices will never return to anything near pre-panic levels, I'm just not sure how bad that aspect will be. Will double the old prices be the new norm? Maybe triple or even more than that?

True inventory? No.
However, I reorganized/consolidated last year as it was stored wherever and a cluster_.
Easier now to actually see what is available and what I need to make.
