I don't think so
thats a handsome nd, i missed out on a long barrelled 29 a year or so ago and have had an itch for one ever since. i wanted to try a scope of some kind on it.

if you buy a ruger, it will always be a ruger and always look like a ruger.

I've got a 29-3 and a 629-4. They work and work well. If I want a DA revolver that can double as a roofing hammer (but not look quite as good as one) I'll get a Ruger. Otherwise, I'll stick with the Smith's that have never given me a speck of trouble.

Wow. Those are some beautiful guns in this thread. I never realized that I wanted a Model 29 until now ;)

If all those model 29s are so weak, what explains all those .45 ACP S&Ws over the years that were subjected to some genuinely hot loads?

The old 1917s weren't even heat treated, yet look at some of the loads that, (admittedly some), survived.

The tradition continues with the various 625 models. People put some amazing loads through them, even to include rechambering them to .460 Rowland. It is not a practice that I approve of, but lots of people get away with it, for at least a little while.

My personal 29-2 has had quite a few Keith type loads through it, and it is still tight. I usually use .44 SPLs any more, because I am not as tough as I once was, but the 29 is still tough.

Not suggesting that you overload it, just that the conventional loads will work quite well.

For serious use, I would still prefer my 625. I just don't use as much powder as I did back in the day.

l have a 29-2 l used in IHMSA for years. Fed with a diet from Elmer Keith's cookbook. No problems except the red insert finally fell out. A couple of 629s came and went. Latest was a 629 Mountain Gun. Heavy and clunky, it just did not feel good. l have two NIB 29-2s l am SURE 'Mike,SC Hunter' would love to get his hands on. Kinda like teasing by emailing pix of 'virgin' Smiths to him now and then

My Redhawk stays in the safe. My S&Ws and occaisionally my OM .357 blackhawk go to the country with me. The Redhawk is wicked-accurate and locks up tighter than any revolver I've seen, but it's about as much fun as shooting, well, I dunno. It's just too heavy and feels like gripping a 2x4. Personally I prefer my .44 mags of the SA persuasion.
